Underrated classic finally gets a proper CD release July 9, 2008 Louis (Quebec, Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album, upon its original release, was overshadowed by the self-titled solo debut from Diana Ross. Both were released in 1970, only a few months apart; the self-titled debut took a little time to take off, but it eventually produced Diana Ross' signature solo anthem "Ain't no mountain high enough"; in the process, the album "Everything is everything" faded into obscurity. Nearly four decades later, it finally gets a proper CD release, remastered and expanded with lots of arresting bonus tracks. The album is vintage Diana Ross, soulful and melodic, with hints of the jazzy direction that she would take in the following years. It is loaded with great performances of well-known songs ("Come together", "They long to be close to you" and "The long and winding road", the latter being a highlight of the album) and arresting original material (the U.K. # 1 smash "I'm still waiting", "Ndoobeedoo'ndoobee", "My place", "How about you"). Diana's unique and instantly recognizable vocals are just the icing on an already well-dressed cake. As far as re-editions go, this one is very good. There are detailed liner notes that give additional insight to the recording of these songs, the sound quality is excellent and the photos included are lovely. Best of all, the bonus tracks are a real treat; her jazzy renditions of "Something" and "What are you doing the rest of your life" are expressively delivered, and the original "Wish I knew" has echoes of Carole King's "Tapestry" album. Longtime fans of Diana Ross would be wise to grab this special re-edition, and casual fans of true soul/R&B music will find a lot to sink their teeth into as well.
