From Amazon.co.uk Badu and her large turban appeared out of nowhere in early 1997, on a murmuring, romantic album that trod the median between old-school soul and contemporary electronic R&B. Badu's songs, especially the hit "On & On" and the catchy "Certainly", recall Sade in their polished, subtle sexiness. Badu almost never raises her voice--save the occasional "ooh-wee!" exultation--but she skilfully uses repetition and chanting to empower her words. Later portraying a beautiful swamp queen, she was one of the only good things about the movie Blues Brothers 2000. --Steve Knopper

Next lifetime July 1, 2004 Friday (Washington, DC) This is one of the best debuts ever. She put her foot in this one along with her other cds. She created a new field in R&B with her new sound. Her album can fit any mood and make you feel like a glass of wine and just relax. It starts off with the mind moving (Rimshot) and flows all the way through with hits like Otherside of the game, Sometimes, No love and maymore. This is one Cd that I can listen 2 all the way through with out pause or fast forward. She hit a home run with this one . If you like this one you will love Momma's Gun and fall in love with her latest cd Worldwide Underground its hot along with her concert.
how cynical can erykah badu be? July 1, 2004 S. I. Lopez (L.A., CA United States) i love badu's voice, i love the music, but i cannot stomach how her lyrics convey such cynicism and bitterness. listening to "lifetime" makes me utterly depressed that this woman in her lyrics cannot hope that she can get the man she wants in her present lifetime, perhaps a bit later than sooner. the lyrics in "certainly" give me the impression that badu deliberately preaches that alienation is her life script. has she gone through horrible relationships which reflect in her lyrics? again, i love her voice; billie holiday's sensuality comes to mind when i listen to this CD. the music is amazing; jazzy, soulful, smooth, and entralling. i'm not saying that erykah should sing about all things hunky-dory, but enough with the cynicism.
A cooled debut... May 2, 2004 brother_ike (L-Boogie) Erykah Badu was part of that neo-soul movement from the mid to late 90s that were trying to make REAL R&B rather than all the bad boy hip hop kinda mess that most acts were making. 'Baduism' is a real cool debut, a nice collection of chilled, jazzy numbers about love & spiritualism etc. The main song here is 'On & On', the big single that I personally can play over and over. But there's a lot of other good stuff here, the production is inventive and Badu has a nice style. 'Next Lifetime' is a deep & meaningful song with a lot of truth. All the melodies here are real nice and the album is likely to stay in your hifi for a long time. Well Recommended for those in need of some intelligent R&B.
GREAT DEBUT ALBUM!!!!! April 11, 2004 A. R SCOTT (Houston, Texas) THIS IS A GREAT DEBUT I LOVE THIS CD IT IS GOOD IT HAS SOME REAL GOOD SONGS ON IT I LIKE ERYKAH SHE IS AN ARTIST. I REALLY DO LIKE THIS ALBUM I REMEMBER WHEN IT HAD FIRST CAME OUT. I LIKE ON AND ON, RHIMSHOT, NEXT LIFETIME, OTHERSIDE OF THE GAME AND MANY OTHERS THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY ERYKAH BADU FAN.
Erykah's Contemporary Soul Is A Classic April 10, 2004 Leo4Neo-Soul (Sydney, Australia) Erica Wright, a.k.a. artiste's persona Erykah Badu is the QUEEN of NEO-SOUL. She first established herself with fellow R&B singer D'Angelo in 1997, and has prevailed through the cynical music industry without turning her back to her morals, always staying decent! But her best efforts still remain in her classical Grammy winning effortlessly-excellent debut "BADUIZM". I am so glad, my friend suggested/gave me a copy of Erykah. Now I am hooked, I am a fan and respect this creative "spiritually-free" artist. I became a Mizz Badu fan only in 2003 -after telling my friend I loved India.Arie and Jill Scott. At the time I was a refreshment of R&B, and now it still is, becoming an example of what a Neo-Soul album should be. Blending the classical soulfulness with hip-hop. Even now this is a fresh breath of air. An organic and the Roots-y (pun intended) R&B Record. "Rim Shot" is a lively intro which shows listeners that Erykah is not a one-trick pony, and not an immitator -she likes to break the rules of Art. But it's on "On & On" that got her a Grammy. But my personal favorite is the intelligent and liberating "Appletree". Erykah makes believable life situations sound pleasurable and real on tracks like "Next Lifetime", "No Love" and the classy piano-driven "Certainly" and it's more funky remix. "Certainly" is so individual that it takes me back to the time of Nina Simone. Also the interludes/skits are so fine and artistic, unlike common homogenised R&B interlude [i.e. Janet Jackson]. But my favorite songs on this album are: "4 Leaf Clover" and it's catchy tune and sexy message, and "Drama" with it's Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" excerpt. (Race relation/Segregation/Miseducation) Overall this album was pleasing, and I'm so overjoyed I got to listen and have Erykah and Baduizm in my music collection. Erykah is now in my Top 10 Fav Artists, she is such a creative, intelligent and ingenious Pisces. Erykah Badu's major feature as an artist is not her intelligent street-wise lyrics or her music instruments but her voice. Sounding very trained with a touch of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, her voice matches her genre perfectly. Jazzy and Soulful. People are saying that Fantasia Barrino of American Idol 3 has an individual voice, they certainly havn't heard Erykah's, proving she is under-rated. Also Erykah's voice doesn't get annoying after a few songs.
