5 Stars for the 1st Cd, 3 Stars for the 2nd June 13, 2006 S. Lennox (Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michael Jackson's latest hits compilation, tries to correct problems of past greatest-hits albums by putting all of his biggest hits in one place, including his time in the Jacksons, and it comes close. The first cd of this compilation is really the essential one. Starting with some of his greatest hits with the Jackson 5, later the Jacksons, while throwing in early solo hits, then finally finishing with all the hits from Off The Wall and Thriller, it's very nearly the greatest hits cd to end all greatest hits cds. Had that first cd been released in 1985 at the height of Michael Jackson mania, it might have gone on to become one of his best selling albums ever. The problem is really only with the second cd, which covers 1987-onward. Eight songs from the album Bad and another seven from Dangerous seems a bit overkill, especially when only one song is included each from HIStory and Invincible, and nothing from Blood On The Dance Floor. Those three albums may not have been his best, but should have been represented better for a more rounded career overview (The European version of this album fixes this somewhat by adding two extra songs from HIStory while removing the non-hit Dangerous). But why Scream, his duet with sister Janet and one of his biggest hits from the 90's, is missing is a mystery. And including Heal The World, with it's childrens' voices intro to the song, seems borderline creepy given MJ's troubles, despite whatever intention he had with the song originally. However, there are a lot of good songs on the second cd, and tracks like The Way You Make Me Feel and Black Or White still hold up well. But if you own the set, you'll probably find yourself listening to the first cd much more than the second.
ooooooooh!!!!!!! April 11, 2006 paula b (surrey, england!) this is a really good collection, all my faves are here, except for "history". the only disappointment for me, is the intro to "don't stop 'til you get enough" is omitted, "the force, it's got a lotta power..... makes me feel like i wanna.........." as this, with "thriller" is probably my fave MJ song. aside from that, it delivers.... i also totally love "earth song" this collection is a fitting testament to MJ the artist. & showcases his hard work, dedication & artistry. i find it sad that MJ's reputation has been tainted, but i think the real problem is that through his collosal career MJ missed out on an important part of integrating in society & therefore grew up with a sense of unrealism & seclusion from simple everyday interactions, & he paid this price for his success........
an amazing collection April 1, 2006 torontogirl (see my name) Yes this is yet another collection of Michael Jackson hits released from Sony (trying to get all they can out of MJ before he leaves) HOWEVER it is a GREAT one. This has hits from the J5, Jacksons and all of his solo career! Try to put this on and NOT to do all your wannabe MJ moves. I recommend this for non MJ fans and MJ fans alike.I think this is my fave of his greatest hits CDS!!!
Really ultimate!!! February 15, 2006 Sonic Why there had to be another Michael Jackson Best of-album with a similar tracklist as "History", "Greatest Hits", "Number Ones" and "The Ultimate Collection" remains an open question. But in contrast to the Box Set this album is a lot less expensive. So if you like "The Jackson 5", "The Jacksons" and Michael as a solo artist this is the ideal collection of songs. The first CD starts off peppy with "I want you back", "ABC" and "The love you save" which are without a doubt the three best songs of the "Jackson 5" and will surely put you in a good mood. "Got to be there" and "Ben" are two timeless ballads which show young Michael's enormous volume. After that the album is taken to another level by a row of sensational dancefloor tracks like "Shake Your Body" and Michael's first ultimate worldwide hit "Don't stop 'til you get enough", which will truly get every party going. Nevertheless the album even manages to beat this with the never-to-be-beaten baseline of "Billie Jean" and the immensely powerful "Beat It". The second CD presents seven hits from "Bad" including the fantastic "Man in the Mirror" and the catchy "Smooth Criminal". This is followed by Michael's biggest hit of the 90s "Black or White" and further great songs from the "Dangerous"-album. Among them classics like the tremendously groovy "Who is it" and the bombast-ballade "Will you be there". Fortunately the album also includes the two undoubtedly best songs from the "History"-album. The irresistible, furious finale of "Earth Song" is probably the most emotional and most rousing piece of music ever put on CD. Not without reason did the song remain on top of the charts for 7 weeks. The original percussive and guitar-driven "They don't care about us" is no less fabulous. To sum it up, on this album every great song is followed by another smash and it thereby shows an immense variety of music. The two CDs undenieably demonstrate that most of Jackson's songs are surely timeless. Therefore "The Essential Michael Jackson" is the ultimate album for everyone who likes good music. There is no better.
