    Editorial Reviews:

    From Amazon.co.uk
The late 1950s were tough on Judy Garland, but this live recording, cut on April 23, 1961, at Carnegie Hall, would (rightfully) bring the legendary icon back into the spotlight. Live would go on to win five Grammys, be Garland's bestselling record, and confirm that, yes, on certain levels, she still had it. Her vocals are as strong as ever on these tunes, and Garland has fun with an audience obviously enraptured by her charms. She's self-deprecating where necessary--on "You Go to My Head" she forgets the lyrics but keeps improvising. But mostly she just shines, especially on tunes she made famous, such as "Come Rain or Come Shine", "Stormy Weather", and "Over the Rainbow". This is easily one of pop music's greatest live recordings and a fine testament to Garland's recorded legacy. --Jason Verlinde

    5 out of 5 stars 5 stars, too little!!   June 30, 2004

"Judy at Carnegie Hall" is easily, one of the most essential albums anybody could ever need. It is by far the greatest "live" performance ever recorded. The fact that the album has never once been out-of-print, does kind of give you a slight idea of how popular it has been over the years. Here, on 2-Discs, we get the complete concert, recorded April 23rd, 1961. With Mort Lindsay and his orchestra.

This has got such an amazing set of songs, and they are all sung so perfectly. A number of these "live" recordings beat any of the studio recordings of them, over the years. The performance of "After You've Gone" is one of the most powerful you are likely to hear, and the length of this concert is well over 2 hours (and for once, I would happily of wanted it to go on for another 2 hours). The arrangements and orchestrations are brilliant, and to hear the performer "live" is one of the greatest things you can get, something that is lost in the studio versions. Complete with a number of songs, by such great writers as Gershwin, Berlin, Mercer, Arlen, and ending with the great "Chicago", this couldn't possibly be any better. A unbeatable great performance, but a truly amazing singer. Her voice is at its best here.

The reissue here, is so great, that it makes it even more better to hear. The sound quality is perfect, and its amazing to think how long ago it was this was recorded. They clearly took their time to produce this album for the great reissue, along with the great booklet inside. A very well written account of the performance, and it makes you even more jealous if you were not one of the people who was there. This is one of the most enjoyable albums you would be ever likely to own. You cant go without this CD. Highly recommend.

Judy Garland's five time Grammy-winning LIVE record (Judy at Carnegie Hall) is a celebration of a magnificent talent. Each song sparkles as Garland's trademark throaty vocals soar to each note as if effortless. Definitely essential, definitely worth it, definitely Judy.

5 out of 5 stars Garland simply at her best--deserves 20 stars!!!   May 10, 2004

Simply put, this recording documents one of the greatest triumphs of Garland's career. The quality of the recording is excellent. That night Judy came out to a standing ovation and if you turn the volume up just a little and listen carefully you can even hear fans chanting a chorus of "Judy! Judy! Judy!" over and over again. Garland then goes on to sing 26 songs, including some jazz, and wows the audience with her performance. Her rapport with the audience is excellent and the fact that Garland concerts were scripted is impossible to notice here. At the end of the second CD of this two CD set there is a long instrumental of "Over the Rainbow." It was at this time that fans rushed to the apron to shake hands with Judy or at least touch her hand or wrist for even just an instant of a second. How I wish I could have been there that night! Many stars flew in expressly for the occasion. Judy does two encores of After You've Gone and Chicago; they are exquisitely well done. At one point Judy "wonders" if the audience is getting tired--how they scream NO! Then she comments that perhaps she should keep singing and that they should all stay all night--and they SCREAM FOR MORE WITH DELIGHT! PLEASE, get this two CD set--I can't see how you or anyone could possibly regret this purchase. A strong BUY!

5 out of 5 stars voice as smooth and soft as velvet!!!   February 11, 2004

This lady had a very nice voice I don't know anyone in this world who had a voice like hers I don't know anyone who can even imitate her . Her voice is like no one else's voice and her voice is so smooth and velvetty it gives you goosebumps she can sing, dance, act, and she was extraordinarily talented it is a shame that she is gone ; One of her daughters Liza Manelli is good and talented but not half as talented as her mom!!!!
This cd gets 5 stars for Somewhere over the Rainbow alone she sings Somewhere Over The Rainbow better than anyone!!!!!!
She has other songs that I enjoy but I think that "Somewhere Over The Rainbow is the best.....

Unlike her famous singing daughter, the indomitable Liza Minnelli, decent copies of Judy Garland's live recordings are something of a rarity, because of the age and general condition of the original media. How many times have we treated ourselves to a Judy compilation, only to discover to our chagrin that the quality is, at best, fuzzy and muffled, and at worst, ruins your enjoyment of the song?

Happily, this is not the case with this - Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition. If, for nothing else, this album is a testament to the power of Digital Remastering. It's clear, crisp and absolutely top-notch in its audio presentation. All the concert is included here, including some wonderful anecdotes about pants and British Journalists, and Judy's tremulous, powerful voice resonates through a two-hour programme with digitally-renewed vigour.

In itself, too, this album is wonderful. Surely these are the best renditions of 'The Man That Got Away', 'Come Rain or Shine' and the immortal 'Chicago' to be had anywhere. judy proves her iconic status as one of the world's best-loved entertainers by telling stories with such warmth and enthusiasm that we forget she's playing to an audience of thousands. She sounds intimate and joyful, and this is reflected in her performances. There are medleys too, the infamous You Made Me Love You / For Me And My Gal medley is finished with a cracking rendition of the Trolley Song, and in the first act, Judy performs Almost Like Being In Love / This Can't Be Love (Medley) with tenderness and gusto.

I can't recommend this title enough. For fans who were disappointed with Telarc's very poor recording of Liza Live at Carnegie Hall, this is a breath of fresh air. It's showbiz at it's ultimate best, and Ms. Garland does indeed give the performance of a lifetime.
