    Editorial Reviews:

    From Amazon.com
Any new gaming console needs to offer a quality fighting game at launch, and for the Xbox that title is Tecmo's Dead or Alive 3. Though DOA3 doesn't revolutionize the fighting genre, it does offer a great gaming experience, and its graphics easily surpass every other fighting game on the market--on any system.

DOA3 offers eight modes of play, including story, team battle, tag battle, and sparring. Sparring mode is customizable and is a nice way for new players to learn how to play the game, while story mode lets you take one of the 16 available characters through a series of matches culminating in a fight against the ueber-powerful Omega. Once you defeat Omega, a short movie specific to your character is unlocked. The story mode doesn't make a lot of sense (and the dialogue is laughable) but the end movies are pretty cool, and it's fun playing through the game as each of the characters.

The real meat of the game, though, is its combat, and DOA3 delivers in spades. Each character has specific attacks, such as Zack's Devil Elbow or Bass Armstrong's Stun Gun Chop, and once you get the moves down, the entire affair can unfold like a carefully choreographed ballet as combatants block blows, counterattack, and land devastating punch and kick combos. Adding to the game's appeal are the massive and detailed multilevel arenas (introduced in DOA2), in which a precise kick or punch can send a combatant plummeting through the air down to the arena's next level.

It's obvious that DOA3 was designed as a showcase for the Xbox's graphical prowess, and it shows--the game's graphics are awesome. The character models look amazing and feature highly detailed clothing and accessories, and the animations are extremely smooth. The environments are also outstanding, and feature tons of little touches such as fluttering leaves, snow-covered ground that can be torn up during the course of a fight, and great-looking water. Even the background structures are highly detailed.

DOA3 doesn't rewrite the rules of the fighting genre, but its great graphics and intense fighting--especially in multiplayer mode--make for an enjoyable gaming experience. --William Harms

    Pros:

    • Brilliant graphics
    • Lots of gameplay modes
    • Multileveled arenas keep the fighting exciting
    Cons:
    • Story mode makes no sense
    • Few unlockable extras

3 out of 5 stars Overated females.   January 22, 2004
    jason morris (miami florida)
well i've finally played the game, and there's not much to offer. the reason why everyone is so hype for this game is the females. which in my opionion is very overated. they look like a normal average female you will see in any other 3d fighter. sure hitomi ROCKS, but she is the only hot looking one. kasumi is just a normal red neck. tina a normal average american with big you know what. same as helena. ayane same as kasumi just she died her hair purple. and christie my god is the ugliest female in the game, she is not attractive at all. that is why her ending video they had to show her naked a*s in the shower. to make up for it, and in my opinion they still failed. i beated out the game with almost everyone, and i still have coulple of more to go. but after you saw everyone endings, there's no replay value, unless you want to see christie's naked a*s multiple times. and like i said the female fighter are too overated. how come soul calibur 2 female fighters nobody gives them the time of day, and they are hot too. also virtua fighter that chick sarah, nobody gives her the time of day, so why only DOA females. overall 5/10.

5 out of 5 stars The revolution in fighting games   January 10, 2004
I have owned this game for about 2 years now so I have played it a lot, and for good reason. This my second favorite fighting next to tekken(tekken is very close to my heart because it was the first fighting game I ever played on the PS1) So this game is great if your are a hardcore fighting fan!

5 out of 5 stars Tears in my eye   December 23, 2003

Dead or Alive 3 for the XBOX is the best fighting game currently available. Though some may dispute that statement by saying that other fighters are better. DOA3 has everything perfectly executed. The gorgeous graphics with fluid animation, various fighting styles and characters, complex combo moves, excellent gameplay modes and responsive controls. The artificial intelligence is excellent and will learn your fighting style to counter attack. So you cannot beat-up the computer with cheap shots or corner them because they learn to escape and kick your ass. I love just about everything in DOA3 except, the sound fx because they sound like metal hitting metal. And despite the fact that the moves look devestating and painfull, none of the characters ever die or get visable injuries
    Pros:
    +excellent controls
    +lots of game modes
    +tag team fights
    +amazing combo moves
    +beautiful character designs
    +fluid animation; almost life-like
    +beautiful backgrounds
+training mode teaches you to kick ass
    +excellent A.I. learns your moves
    +awesome counter-attacks/moves

    Cons:
    -sound fx are strange
-nobody dies or gets permanant injuries
Dead or Alive 3 is a spectacular fighting game because it looks amazing and plays amazing. I think it is the best fighting game out there.

5 out of 5 stars Tecmo brings more realistic goodness!   December 22, 2003
    Brandon (Olathe, KS USA)
This game is worth 5 stars, And its all for 19 dollars! Such a great prise, But for 2 years of goodness it should be worth over 30 dollars ;-). This game takes you to a realistic world of over 14 charecters, With fabulouse CG endings! With a new feature of unlimited falling. Each charecter comes with 2 or 3 costumes and 3 or less secret colors. Smash your enemy on the wall, Knock them off to a secret stage area. Play story mode and watch some special demo scenes and meet your match! And the final boss needs some special strategy to defeat him, What i do is i wait for him to come near me and i keep punching him non stop!. The hidden charecter is like an EX charecter... I was hoping it was a new charecer... The female fighters look more sexy and dressed to kick butt! Most of the fighters don't really have a new costume but they look better on Xbox! There arn't that many unlockables like the second one but still its a fun game!

    Features:
    Over 14 charecters of play.
Unlock special endings and a secret ex fighter.
    Secret color changer feature.
over 4 modes of fighting action!
over 3 new fighters of all countries.
    Music from the band aerosmiths.
    Wall breaking feature.
