Amazon.co.uk It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucleaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of anti-matter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels and Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller--think Katherine Neville's The Eight (but cleverer) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but more accessible). Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, anti-matter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilisation. Brown seems as much juggler as author--there are lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, yet Brown manages to hurl the reader headlong into an almost surreal suspension of disbelief. While the reader might wish for a little more sardonic humour from Langdon and a little less bombastic philosophising on the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal flaws than niggling annoyances--readers should have no trouble skimming past them and immersing themselves in a heck of a good read. "Brain candy" it may be, but it's tasty. --Kelly Flynn, Amazon.com

Le meilleur. .
Would be 4 stars except for the silly ending!
Last fall I made a commitment to read Mr. Brown" Novels Starting with his first to the present. Well, after reading "Digital Fortress" (not very good), it took me a few months to give old Dan another try, but I am glad I did overall this is a much better book than "Fortress," Though still a long way from prefect. If nothing else this book ios a non stop thrill ride that kept me turning pages, in spite of some of the outrageousness of the plot. The over the top plot is scientific terrorists versus Vatican Cardinals. The story features the Harvard specialist on religious symbolism Robert Langdon ( I have not read the Da Vinci Code yet but he is the main character of that book). There are so many twists and turns in this book it is difficult lay out the plot with out giving things away that would ruin the read. But lets just say it centers around the ancient "Iliminati" a group of Renaissance scientist who back in the day met in secrete in order to avoid Papal scrutiny, lets just say that there scientific truths could have gotten them killed. Langdon is called in by a Swiss research lab when a famous scientist, who discovered antimatter, is found dead in his lab with the words "Iluminati" branded on his chest. The story fires off from here into a whirlwind of twists and turns, that also takes you on a tour of Rome, and includes a shadowy group of terrorist who have planted an antimatter bomb in Vatican City. My biggest problem with this book was the ending. I won't give it away, but it makes no sense and is really very silly. If the ending had been better this would have been a four star read. With the improvement between Digital Fortress and this book I am now looking forward to deception point! If you like archeological based thrillers you must check out the cult classic "Tourist in the Yucatan," great read!
This book is a real page-turner.
One of the most absolutely fabulous books I have ever read. It kept me trapped during a trip to South Africa. I was always looking for an opportunity to read it. Every free moment had to be used - while in the train, the bus, the plane, in my hotel room, the park. I couldn't stop until I had completed it. If you love Dan_brown you should also look at~Giorgio_Quest~by,Giorgio K. A novel inspired and commented on by Dan_Brown.
