Kenneth Davis's aim in this program, as it is in all the titles of this popular series, is to make learning relevant and fun. He succeeds marvelously. Davis has an easygoing style and a good sense of humor. And most importantly, he knows how to present the "big picture." His history of the United States is not a series of isolated incidents that happened long ago with no bearing on contemporary American life. Listening to this presentation, we recognize patterns, notice how problems of the past resurface in our own present, and realize that history is what makes us today. We are also presented with a look at American history that is far more honest than anything gleaned from traditional textbooks. Heroes and villains alike are presented, warts and all, and the "less savory moments" in America's past are discussed frankly. For, as Davis explains, "the real picture is much more interesting than the historical tummy tuck." The theme running through the program, from pre-European settlement to the Reagan years, is the struggle for power--the never-ending battle between the haves and have-nots that is the "essence of history." Six hundred years of history are broken up into manageable segments though a series of questions (spoken in a number of different voices to help distinguish them from the main narration), each of which is given a specific answer and then discussed in the context of its contemporary setting and perhaps past and future events. Un livre a recommander aux etudiants (je m'en suis servi a la fac) mais pas seulement. Ce livre est base sur un concept tres simple : des questions et des reponses.
Ca parait trivial et enfantin mais qu'est-ce qu'on apprend comme choses sur l'histoire des Etats-Unis! De l'arrivee des premiers peuples nomades a la presidence de Bill Clinton : plusieurs siecles d'Histoire sont decryptes par Kenneth C. Davis. Les histoires marquant un tournant sont bien sur evoquees : la decouverte du continent, Pocahontas, l'esclavage, les 13 Colonies, la guerre d'independance, la Guerre de Secession, la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, la Crise de 29, l'affaire Rosa Parks, le Mouvement des Droits Civiques, l'assassinat de Kennedy, la Guerre du Viet Nam... Et encore, je suis tres bref!
Un livre ecrit dans un anglais tout a fait abordable et avec quelques petites pointes d'humour par-ci par-la. Un excellent moyen de se cultiver, ce serait bete de s'en priver!
L'Histoire en langage clair concis et comprehensible Peuvent 7, 2003
On m'a donne ce livre pendant un voyage aux US. C'est tres bien ecrit - avec un tableau des evenements importants de chaque guerre afin de ne pas s'y perdre. Au debut de chaque chapitre, il y a une liste de questions auxquelles il va repondre i.e. Qu'est-ce que Tammany Hall? Qu'est-ce qu'un "Big Stick" etc. Il est vrai qu'en histoire on entend souvent parler de sujets et on passe rapidement dessus (si on evite pas completement le sujet). Ce livre donne a tous ceux qui veulent le lire plus d'information sur l'histoire americaine et je me suis rendu compte qu'en lisant un autre livre historique en parallele ce livre est un vrai soutien. Je suggererait ce livre pour tout amateur d'histoire americaine. On apprend pas mal de choses et ca peut etre drole aussi mais c'est surtout tres clair.
