How to tell the story of a whole nation? Kedward would have you believe that he has the ability to sum it all up and put forward France and the French in one volume. But rather than provide summary, insight or opinion he falls back on academic technique, volumes of detail and the continuous changing list of personalities. That does make up the stuff of history, but does not make for good history telling. The lack of a theme or goal makes the book diffuse and confusing. Read the Seven Ages of Paris instead.
