Simply Great August 6, 2008 Stuart Sidebotham (England) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I got this book for my 21st and what a book. I read this book within a few day, such a great plot and I love the idea that I am going to meet Ballista (the main charater) not only in a second novel but also a third. When you read this book you feel that you are there and fighting the Pursians. I would recommend this to anyone but beware there is alot of swearing in it but this shouldn't put you off. Dr Harry Sidebottom is a lecturer at oxford university and he knows about this era, also this era of the Roman empire isn't explored as much as when Rome was the world power. 10/10 from me!!!!

Wow, great new writer...realistic action and thought, loved the fact the main character was an Anglo/Saxon in a Roman world. This is one of the best historical fiction stories i have read, and i have ready as many as i can. Now I can't wait for the next installment...when is that coming out?

It was refreshing to read a good novel about the 3rd century roman Empire. It had a lot of well detailed battle scenes and excellent background of that time in Rome's history. I very much enjoyed Ballista and his familia...looking forward to book 2 !
Top Notch August 3, 2008 I. B. Pitbladdo (Edinburgh) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We don't need a lot of verbal clutter here, quite simply, if you enjoy Conn Iggulden's work you'll enjoy this. Mr. S obviously knows his period inside out, add this to the fact that he is clearly a natural teller of tales and you have a very satisfying read which equals if not betters the work of Mr. Iggulden. If a criticism you must have; towards the end of the story the main character is made to do something which to me, belies all that had gone before. This in no way marred my enjoyment of the story. It's just that I liked the guy so much I feared for his reputation. Roll on the next episode
A thoroughly researched Saga August 3, 2008 H. Megerisi 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A wonderful and gripping tale, that weaves intrigue, mystery, treachery and the cold callous acts of warfare into a period of time that is the least known of the Roman era. Without giving too much away Balista, an Angle Norse barbarian a general in the Roman army, is sent to a border town on the Euphrates to protect it against the might of the expected Sassanid army; It details the defences, treachery and gruesome art of warfare. Well worth the read!
