4 out of 5 stars Draw on the Right side   January 21, 2008
    Mr. A. Cefferty (UK, Sheffield)
I bought this book as was advised to by my university tutor.

I did find some of the techniques useful and it does make you think differently when drawing. I personally think this book is useful to people of all levels in drawing because the book is full of many useful tips, The only down point is that some of the techniques are rather dull. But then again no pain no gain.

    5 out of 5 stars You'll surprise yourself   July 2, 2007

I bought this book when I decided to start an art class. On the back cover and inside the book (pages 18 to 20) are before and after drawings by pupils on a 5 day course learning how to draw using using the techniques that this book is based on. They are all self portraits - some are quite good to start with but an equal number are pretty lousy, however, ALL the post instruction drawings show a huge improvement ranging from good to excellent. Cynic that I am, I showed these pictures to my friend scornfully saying "I don't belive that, do you?". I had to eat my words. Simply - the book works. Once you realise how to "tap in to the right side of the brain" its like learning some fantastic secret - ANYBODY can learn to draw and learn quickly. Try the "upside down horse" - you'll impress even yourself!!

2 out of 5 stars Not for everyone   July 24, 2006

I bought this book and it's accompanying workbook but found the exercises rather tedious. I had a nagging feeling at the beginning when I realised I didn't like the style of the post intructional drawings as much as some of the pre instructional ones as they lacked a certain charm. And then when I realised I preferred the results and the process of my pre instructional work too I decided that the book and her style of teaching were just not right for me.

It seems that for a book which promises to help you to use your creative side it's rather technical and doesn't seem to encourage expression.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book on drawing that there is   June 30, 2006

Quite simply, this should be the first 'teach yourself to be an artist' book that you buy. It addresses the basic reasons why people go wrong, and teaches you how to overcome the problems in a very clear way.

For example, tables normally have four legs of equal length, colour and shape. But drawings which depict tables like this are usually unrealistic and confused. You need to draw what you see - and not what you 'know'.

The book starts off with too much theory, and it can be a bit repetitive, but the improvement in one's results is astonishing.

I got the bug to start drawing and painting, and soon had bought 10 books and borrowed another 10 from the library. When I opened this book, I realised that I only needed a couple of technique books to supplement it. So, many of my purchases are now on their way to eBay...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight in the art of drawing   May 30, 2006

This book is a 'must read' for everyone who wants to understand the 'art of drawing'. When someone tells me know, I can't draw, I got the answer: 'You can!' This book thought me to respect each others' drawing capabilities and it enhanced mine. I look different to drawing and paintings now walking though galleries or even watching photos in magazines. Watching how the environment around us changes through the day, how people's expression can differ ... this book touched the right sensor in me and thought me a lot of using your eyes to 'look with your mind' and to get it down on a piece of paper.
