 Lose yourself for a few quiet hours August 18, 2008

I thought this book was a really good easy read. If you need to lose yourself from the world for a while, this is the one for you. Jo takes over her gran's woolshop and you follow her through her journey.
The book made me want to start knitting again, so that must be a good thing.

When I first picked up the book, I thought this would be a good, enjoyable read, however I was quite disappointed. Where do I start? First of all, I didn't like the writing style at all; it seems as if the author was just Trying Too Hard, and the capital spelling of bits that were obviously meant to be funny was extremely annoying (yes, author, your readers do have a brain and know themselves which bits are - supposedly - funny). The main character, Jo, didn't do anything for me - I didn't warm to her and really couldn't care less what happened to her. The lengthy and frequent descriptions of the `antics' her boys got up to were equally as annoying and not really funny. Now I know this book isn't a thriller and didn't expect this to be a fast-moving story, but the plot was flimsy and so boring, nothing happening, I was very tempted to abandon this book altogether but thought I'd give it a chance and persevere. It did get a bit more interesting about half way through when Jo befriended the famous actress but if you were hoping that from now on the story finally picked up and got more interesting, think again. I most definitely won't be reading the sequel. In short, if you enjoy this type of book, there are plenty of better authors around, for example Katie Fforde.

I really enjoyed this novel. There were some laugh-out-loud moments and, as a knitter and mother living in a seaside town myself, much to relate to.
Great to take on holiday, especially if you are off to a small British holiday resort. If you like Katie Fforde etc then you will probably appreciate this.

I very much enjoyed this book. Similar to the likes of the late Melissa Nathan in comedic value. The relationship between Jo and her boys is refreshing and provides 'laugh out loud' moments. I was a little dubious at the arrival of the A-List celebrity in such a small location, however, it did provide evidence of the loyalty Jo has for people she is fond of. This left me feeling rather sad of the circumstances of Jo and her husbands relationship.
I really loved the other characters. An amazing Gran (as they all are!), a set in her ways mohair enthusiast, a fiesty Italian and an avid strip poker news caster!
I have read many reviews that I didn't agree with, so I hope if you like Sharon Owens, Melissa Nathan or the antics of energetic small children in a seaside town you will enjoy this book.
