where's the substance? August 17, 2008 Ms. L. J. Armstrong (Reading) Well what can I say, it is a holiday read that lacks depth and anything else really. For what it is, it is a mildly diverting read with a few interesting bits thrown in. Hmmm...Richard and Judy have alot to answer for.
Fantastic Book!! August 5, 2008 D. Alper Could't put the book down. Read it in 2 days. Fascinating, believable characters. You felt like you were there.
The Island August 5, 2008 P. Wire (Hythe, Kent) Read this book on holiday and could not put it down - lovely story which made me want to find out more about Spinalonga. I am looking forward to reading Victoria Hislops next book.
Loved it August 4, 2008 D. Milner (Kent, UK) I absolutely loved this book. I found it interesting, loved the descriptions and loved the characters. Found myself wondering about them. Highly recommended
easy read July 28, 2008 Julie Mayo (Lewes, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Island An easy read for a holiday pastime. I found this story one of love, compassion and history. Who said every family has it's wardrobe skeletons? Although many have criticized Hislop in her approach to the factual/medical content and so called stigma of having Leprosy, one must not forget that this is not a reference book but a story of Greece's abandonment of it's affected people before the outbreak of WW2 and in particular, the way one family and it's fellow islanders lives are changed because of this. Sad and moving at times (keep the tissues at the ready) but nonetheless a moving story.
