Same book as Lollipop Shoes! May 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, so I have read all of JH's books and so while skimming here I saw this one 'Girl with No Shadow' and thought Ohhhh, another I have not read! How did that slip me by? Well it didn't. This is the same book as Lollipop Shoes - I feel pissed off now because I have the same bloody book twice - and really it it ought to be more specific here at Amazon. So not a quibble with the actual book... thought I'd stick this on here since some other foolish person may do I have. But why must the same book have TWO titles? Why do that? So silly.
Oh. And no where near as good as Chocolat. Lacking in the richness and mouth watering detail that made the former so divine to read.
The Girl with No Shadow - Major Con May 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a great JH fan. So I saw the new title, and was induced to buy it as I'd also found Evil Seed. As Girl with No Shadow arrived I was so excited, and then angry. I feel conned .... Maybe I should have reserched more. I will put it back on sale here. But I will make is clear it is a tacky copy (the paper etc is cheap and tacky) to Lollipop Shoes, that I loved..
Bad on you Joanne Harris. Cheap Shot...
Buyer Beware! May 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anyone thinking of buying The Girl With No Shadow needs to be aware that it is not, as the advertising suggests, a brand new Joanne Harris novel; in fact it is simply The Lollipop Shoes under a different title.
Whilst I loved both Chocolat & The Lollipop Shoes I feel somewhat conned by the misleading advertising for The Girl With No Shadow. Why an American publishing house feels the need to re-publish The Lollipop Shoes under a new title I don't know but don't make the same mistake I did. My copy of The Girl With No Shadow is on its way back to Amazon!!!
A very worthy sequel May 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sometimes when you read the sequel of a book that you have really enjoyed you close the book when you've finished feeling quite sad because it just didnt live up to the expectation - with Lollipop Shoes I closed the book very sad as I just didnt want it to end. I wasnt disappointed in the least and in fact, I think I enjoyed it more than Chocolat.
Joanne Harris re-acquaints the reader with Vianne, Anouke and Roux - all well-loved characters. Brand new and major characters are Rosette - Vianne's second daughter and Zozie, the mysterious lady who appears to be a guardian angel to the little family. Vianne, Anouke and Zozie take turns to tell the story, and as each tell the same story, each one gives their own different view.
The story is full of mystery and magic, interwoven with the story of Vianne and her family's struggle to make a living from their chocolate shop, Vianne's relationship with new man Thierry and old beau Roux. Running alongside the main story are the individual stories of the shop's customers - including the slightly aloof Madame, the local cafe owner and a street-painter, amongst others.
The story turns quite dark and atmospheric towards the end whilst still seeming realistic, and I certainly couldnt turn the pages fast enough to find out the ending.
Disgusted May 7, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Was looking forward to a 'new' joanne harris novel only to discover that I've just forked out money for a book I've already got i.e. The Lollipop Shoes. Amazon - you could have advertised this a bit better. Totally misleading to customers.
BUYERS BEWARE - THIS IS THE SAME BOOK AS THE LOLLIPOP SHOES. Now even more disgusted that Amazon are using reviews from last year for the Lollipop Shoes to try and sell this book. What a con.
