The Front May 22, 2008 Cornwell treats the reader to a story wound around modern day politics in America against the background of murder and intrigue. The characters seem to be based on the same theme as her previous books but in 'different clothing'. Scarpetta has turned into Lamont, a power hungry yet inwardly naive attorney and Morino is now Win, the downtrodden yet effective investigator, who dresses in designer clothes albeit second hand. We also meet Stump, a one legged investigator and Win's mum and 'off the wall' pyschic. The book makes some references to Cornwells own views on US politics and her obvious involvement first hand. These are weaved nicely into an intriguing albeit rather shallow plot. Why does Stump have one leg? well read the book you'll find out.
The Front May 22, 2008 Although I enjoyed the gentle humour and the politics of the American police force I found the Front a little dissappointing. I have come to expecta lot from the Scarpetta books and I found this book a little shallow in comparison.
Humour in Boston May 22, 2008 Patricia Cornwell - The Front
An intriguing and yet amusing read - a long way from the dark forensic detail of Patricia Cornwell's other main protagonist, Dr Kay Scarpetta.
This is a tale of the underhanded, devious and conniving nature of a locally elected official, Monique Lamont, the District Attorney. DA Lamont was first encountered in a previous novel `At Risk'(2006).
`Yeah, well, I just got another awful job.' So says Win Garano the hapless Massachuesetts State Investigator. `Full of lies,' Nana says. `Be careful what you do, because it isn't about what she says.' `I know what it's about. Ambition. Selfishness. Hypocrisy. Vanity. Persecuting me.'
The story weaves a plot through the re-examination of an old case, the death of an English woman, Janie Brolin. The current local police, represented by `Stump', assist - or hinder in the forty year old murder and, through this case the relationship between the two investigators develops, albeit a fairly caustically one on most occasions.
The characters and their relationships is the theme running throughout. Whether the person is a user or used unfolds as the pages are turned.
I will look forward to meeting the characters again in the not too distant future.
About as exciting as watching paint dry... May 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I fail to take to any of the characters in this book, and for some reason I could not seem to shake the feeling of getting the book read, and done with. PCs last book with Win 'Geronimo' in it wasn't much better than this one, if not worse.
Read it if you enjoyed 'At Risk' otherwise, don't waste your money, your not missing anything exciting.
Patricia delivers again! May 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been a fan of Patricia Cornwell since her Postmortem beginings - I have loved all her books and get annoyed by her negative critisim she regulary gets.
This is the second book featuring Win Garano and co and its easy to like the characters she is creating with this new series.
I love the fact there are strong women leads - one of the reasons i read her books.
My only complaint is that the book is not long enough as i couldnt put it down once i started reading.
Patricia is a great writer and this book is another one of her finest.
I would definately recommend it.
