5 out of 5 stars Kay Scarpetta   April 25, 2003

I have read every single one of the Scarpetta series many times over, and each book is as good as the last. Some people are saying that the last couple are boring and are not worth reading but they are wrong. The books have a progression, in the first we watch Scarpetta finding her feet in a new job with new people and then towards the end we find her losing her lover, Benton Wesley, we watch her world basically crumble around her, where it gets to the point that she will eventually leave Virginia. The later books deal with the emotional aftermath she must face after losing yet another person she loves so much.

Scarpetta is so involved in her work that the people she chases ultimately become interested in her, the temple gault storyline was utterly convincing. Scarpetta is very good at what she does and ultimately that makes her a target for people who do not want to see her succeed, she has many political enemies as well as the psycopaths she aspires to catch. We will see a new phase for Scarpetta now, a change if you like but she still has the two most important people in her life with her, Lucy and Marino, and the three of them will continue to fight for people who cannot fight for themselves. She wants justice for the dead, when the rest of the world isn't interested.

Cornwell is a genius, utterly believable, scientifically credible, and she has created one of the greatest literary characters of our time. People who dismiss the books as boring are doing Cornwell a great injustice.

Seriously, keep reading about Scarpetta and you won't be disappointed, the storylines are intricately weaved and Cornwell makes the characters seem so human, that you cant help but be drawn into the plot, and find yourself hoping that Scarpetta will continue to fight evil for a long time to come!

4 out of 5 stars Kay should call it quits!   February 19, 2002

I am a huge Patricia Cornwell fan and await new releases of her books eagerly. However, I have been really disappointed with the last two or three as they really seem to have lost their edge, you just know what is going to happen. I think it is about time Patricia let Kay Scarpetta die and concentrate on some new and exciting characters. How much adventure and near death experiences can one forensic pathologist take!? I'm sure she would have retired by now!

5 out of 5 stars the start of a great series   April 19, 2000

I have read all the Scarpetta books and have to say that the first 2 are fantastic the rest very good but the last 2 are starting to be a bit dissapointing, if you have to read any go for these first ones, they are gripping stuff, you will not want to put down, the introduction to Kay Scarpetta and her associates is wonderful, in fact everything up to Point of Origin is well worth a read but from then on don't bother.

A brilliant series of P.Cornwell books, I thought that Cruel and Unusual was v.good and Body Farm was brilliant, haven't read Black Notice as yet, i'm waiting for the paper-back version.

All in all, well worth buying!
