An overview... June 30, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have just completed my AS course in Classical Studies, including a module on the topic of Athenian Democracy. This book provided relevent information in a clearly presented, easy-to-read format, and would be a must have for Classics departments teaching Athenian Democracy. It's only failing was that it did not go into quite the amount of depth required at AS level, and would possibly be better suited for GCSE courses, however, as a teaching resource, its only competitor is John Thorley's book (another invaluable tool!), so get both of them for two different views on the Athenian democratic system.
Informative, with clear pictures and diagrams July 5, 2001 The book gives a very informative look at Athenian Democracy covering all of the main points. It includes clearly thought out diagrams and also includes pictures to help clarify matters. Barrow writes in an easily accesible manner, so students studying for GCSE can easily get a grasp of democracy. The book includes many quotations from poets and writers of the time that give the book its factual edge.
