Amazon.co.uk Review When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with cliches, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

a dramatic and touching romantic drama August 27, 2008 Stampy (England) In an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novel, Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson) stars as Noah, a young man who falls in love with rich girl Allie, and the two embark on life together. Described by critics as one of the most romantic films in years, Nick Cassavetes romantic drama justifies the plaudits with a wonderful directed film about love and relationships, with heart-warming moments along with dramatic and humorous encounters. The story of the young couple is very sweet, if somewhat corny. Though with imperfections and complications along the way, the plot drives itself away from the norm, to deliver a sweet and realistic approach to relationships. The direction helps achieve a good realistic approach but also dives into a fantasy genre to, none more so than the rowing into the swan lake scene. This particular scene is really romantic and the direction and slow approach makes it feel like a complete romantic fantasy and will instantly make you smile, whatever age or gender you are. The acting by Gosling and McAdams (Mean girls) is a beautiful on screen partnership, which will make you really associate with their characters, but the pairing of Garner (Murphy's romance) and Rowlands (a woman under the influence) is one of the main reasons to watch this film. Very soft and sentimental in their respective roles, the pair create a sadness but an excitement within their difficult environment, and the ending, though I didn't cry, is praised for its sentimental value, which is very understandable. Too many current films are romantic comedies which run on cliches, but the Notebook focuses strongly upon the dramatic side of relationships, and is made as memorable as Titanic, with heart wrenching moments. The plot is extremely slow moving, to capture the mood of the character's personalities, so if you're up for fast paced action as well as romance, put Titanic on. But if you are in the mood for a very dramatic realistic approach to relationships with a few cliches thrown in, then this is for you. 8/10
TERRIBLE!! August 25, 2008 Mrs. M. S. Atkinson (Birmingham, UK) OH MY GOD THIS FILM IS TOTAL RUBBISH! I was informed by my mother and sister-in-law this film was "fantastic" and "will make you cry". I cried cause I'd wasted two hours of my life! The story was totally preditable. I didn't like the characters. And there was absolutely no need for the last ten minutes of the film. I would NOT recommend this to anyone. Its a very long drawn out film, why?! There is nothing meaty to get into at all! The main characters Noah and Allie meet as kids, fall in love, then Allie's parents tell them they can't be together. She moves on, forgets him, goes to college and gets engaged to some smarmy bloke. While Noah is totally consumed by his love for her, and renovates some house she liked. Surprise Surprise, they finally get it together. Allie wastes loads of time deciding between Noah and the smarmy bloke she is engaged to. Which as she'd taken a weekend off away from the bloke she is engaged to (and didn't tell him why or where she was going), to visit Noah and the house, I would have thought her mind would have been made up... but no! All in all, its totally CRAP! Don't waste your life.... don't see it!
The Film V The Book August 13, 2008 Denise Howard I was very impressed with the book by Nicolas Sparks that I placed a review on Amazon last year. I realised that there was now a film adapted from the book, but I was very reluctant to watch it as in my experience the film is always a disappointment because there are always large chuncks taken away from the original story. Then I was told to watch this film as it was so beautiful. It was amazing and I was in tears as the film unfolded. There are some changes as I expected but the atmosphere and sincerety of the book is captured in this movie. I do recommend if you haven't read the book to do so, the book has a beautiful poetic feel and you will appreciate this film even more. And still make sure you have some tissues because I cried reading it.
truly beautiful August 3, 2008 Ms. A. Robinson (derbyshire) i saw this film about 5 years ago and enjoyed it, since then i have read the book on which the movie is based (along with many others by nicholas sparks). i have just rewatched the movie and i cried and laugh through most of it. it is a truly beauitful story, and the movie is just as good as the book. i would recommend anyone who enjoys this story to read the follow-up book called 'the wedding' which is about ali & noahs daughter and her family (cant give too much away) which is equally as beautiful.
Touching! July 12, 2008 Aj (Basingstoke, U.K) Although I don't usally like these sort of films this was brilliant! Touching & heartwarming! Ryan Gosling was amazing & i don't think they could get anyone else to play the part as well as he did!
