A modest movie a very bad DVD October 21, 2008 Empe (Italy) A modest b-movie on Vietnam, FMJ-like. The DVD is very bad: no subtitles, no alternative tracks, a indecent reproduction. Zero or subzero stars ?
Great film April 29, 2008 Rob (London) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
WHAT IT SAYS ON THE BACK OF THE BOX. Recognised as the inspiration for stanly kubricks full metal jacket the boys in company c is a high end member of the cannon classic battle field movies and a frighten realistic critique of the pointlessness and corruption universally associated with the us Vietnam war. The boys in company c follows the lives of 5 naive young marine inductees from their training in boot camp through a tour in Vietnam that quickly devolves into a hellish nightmare. Disheartened by futile combat , appalled by the corruption of their Vietnamese ally, and constantly endangered by the incompetence of their own company commander, the young men find a possible way out of the war. They are told that if they can defeat a rival soccer team, they can spend the rest of their tour playing exhibition games behind the lines. But as they might have predicted, nothing in Vietnam is as simple as it seems. Run time 121 minutes and is rated 15. PERSONAL REVIEW I first heard about this film from my dad who had originally seen it in 1980/1 on betamax so it obviously a film that was up there and worth remembering as a good film and not a crappy one to warn others about not buying it or watching it. Having watched it I too would recommend this film and it is well worth the 8 Amazon are charging for it at the moment, the film was released in 1977 and the film is in colour and shot in a way that anyone who loves 80's films and likes the war genre would like. It is very hard to watch this film and not compare it with full metal jacket especially as I have already seen full metal jacket numerous times. Both films start off with induction at a marines training facility including a few touches that were not in full metal jacket such as getting their hair shaved off with the abuse from the sgt who was also the drill sgt in full metal jacket but younger , the additional touch was them having their photos taken like mug shots with their serial number on display, they then have their first night in the dorms which has traces of STRIPES in it but a bit more serious. They then go onto the rest of the story line where "Washington" who has an hidden agenda is scouting and gathering information for drug supply in the states (this is some thing I had not seen in any movie until American Gangster). The battle scenes are well done and the pace of the film starts steady and keeps you wanting to watch there are also some nice moments in it like when they are sent to a village and find it is empty and so blow a million dollars worth of munitions on a air strike and artillery barrage and sit back and watch the war. This film has elements from a lot of army/Vietnam films such as stripes, full metal jacket, Biloxi blues and hamburger hill all of which came after. All in all this this a Great film, if you liked full metal jacket you will like this one and it would idealy be purchased with full metal jacket.
