5 out of 5 stars Let fate decide!   July 31, 2008
    John Wilcock (Blackburn)
This is a great feel good romance to be enjoyed by big boys and girls alike, curled up together on the sofa. It is all about fate and whether two people are meant to be together. The signs are always there to guide us in love and life, but will you see them or be able to read them?

John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale who take excellent parts, are out Christmas shopping and meet when both try to buy the last pair of black gloves in Bloomingdales. Destiny has brought them together and they hit it off straight away. They go for a coffee, spend a little time together and both feel that there is something special between them, but neither is free!

The gorgeous Miss Beckinsale, full of fun and life, hits on a plan to let fate decide if they should be together, of course we think they should be, but how will things work out? Both keep an eye out for the signs but time ticks by and life's decisions must be made. The film is quite gripping as we will them to find each other! Ahhhh!

Don't worry, you will love this film, unless you have just married someone "quite nice" and then bumped into the love of your life 5 minutes later! Then you will kick yourself and wish you had seen this film first! Educate yourself now and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and heartwarming film   July 31, 2007

Romantic comedies aren't normally my sort of film (due to the relatively low explosion count and lack of gunfire :)), but I defy anyone to fail to be moved by this tale of not so much star-crossed as star-somewhat messed-about-with lovers. The script is excellent, and the central performances from both John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale are perfect. Perfect. With strong support (especially from Piven as Cusack's best friend), there's no shortage of laughter, but one genuinely comes to care about these two people and I was desperately keeping my fingers crossed that there WOULD be a fairytale ending. I can't recommend this film highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars fated to be a minor classic   July 11, 2007

OK so the rubbishy cover is going to put a few people off but this is one of those modern `romance films' which are actually quite good.
The central premise of meeting someone once and knowing they are `the one' isn't new, but it is handled very nicely here with our star-struck couple deciding to leave everything to fate, with problematic results which ensue. There are some great moments and ideas - the writing down of the phone number on the dollar bill etc but you get the sense that they weren't really sure if the whole thing would work. In my experience they always set things at Christmas if the idea is a bit quirky - a kind of `if all else fails' philosophy.

They needn't have worried - John Cusak is in his element in his niche role of the ordinary guy trying to do something extraordinary with his life. And the two supporting actors - Cusak's best friend and Beckinsale's daft eastern flute-playing boyfriend are standouts, worth an honourable mention. Beckinsale is good, but it's a hard job keeping up with Cusak on any day of the week.

All in all, very nice - and `nice' in a good way I mean. One to watch with your other half if you have one. Nice package too - commentary and feature on the making of etc.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant entertaining comedy   June 22, 2007

This is more a review of the film than of the DVD.
I saw the film for the first time yesterday and found it very entertaining. The main thing which worked for me was the story more than anything else. The story is inspired to say the least, and is pleasantly supported by some good acting and cinematography.
The story centres around 2 people who meet and feel like there's more to their meeting than chance, though they are both with other partners at the time. However the same fate that brought them together conspires to sunder them until the time is right. And when would be the right time? Cut to a few years in the future when they're both on the brink of serious commitment and both want to lay to rest the feeling they got from that one evening years ago. This forms the bulk of the film as we see how the pair struggle to make face swing another meeting, and then are cheated time and again.
Splendid viewing - I hardly noticed how the minutes went by. This film made me smile and cheer and all the rest of it.
John Cusack, Kate Bekinsale, Eugene Levy, Jeremy Piven et al deliver the expected performances with ease. But this is not the best film to watch for acting or direction or anything deep. Rather watch this film for a 90 minute (or so) vacation to pleasantville. Set in New York, this film has a distinctly "Friendsy" feel to it. Spend an evening with Serendipity - you'll enjoy it.

Does Fate exist? And can it guide and reach Jonathan and Sara-despite their current partners, and over time and distance? Some people may doubt that magic/fate exists in this day and age but magic this film truly is. After a hard day,sit back and bask in the warmth that this movie will put in your heart(even the hardest of cynical hearts). Treat yourself to the romance and magic of New York, great acting and direction, superb script and a wonderful soundtrack. Whether you believe in fate or not this movie will make you feel so good you may just admit to yourself that such a wonderful encounter is possible.
