    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.co.uk Review
"The book was better" has been the complaint of many a reader since the invention of films. The Green Mile is Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison drama The Shawshank Redemption was the first) and is a very faithful adaptation of King's serial novel. In the middle of the Depression, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) runs death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Into this dreary world walks a mammoth prisoner, John Coffey (Michael Duncan) who, very slowly, reveals a special gift that will change the men working and dying (in the electric chair, masterfully and grippingly staged) on the mile.

As with King's book, Darabont takes plenty of time to show us Edgecomb's world before delving into John Coffey's mystery. With Darabont's superior storytelling abilities, his touch for perfect casting, and a leisurely 188-minute running time, his film brings to life nearly every character and scene from the novel. Darabont even improves the novel's two endings, creating a more emotionally satisfying experience. The running time may try patience, but those who want a story, as opposed to quick-fix entertainment, will be rewarded by this finely tailored tale. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Full Marks!!   September 14, 2008
    WaterElemental (UK)
As you can tell from the other people's reviews this movie is brilliant!!
But what is not said (at least I don't think so! I didd'nt read all 100+ reviews!) is the picture quality! i'm using a Toshiba 47" 1080i LCD HDTV with a PlayStation3 with HDMI connection.

For a DVD it's got AMAZING detail! I'm surprised they managed to fit this 3 hour film with this quality onto a DVD!! I have a collection of around 500 DVDs & this must be in the top 5 of best picture quality in my selection!

Buy it! you won't regret it! (or wait for the Blu-ray)

5 out of 5 stars The Green Mile...where Miracles can happen and do   June 9, 2008
    M. C. Crawley (Northern Ireland)
Frank Darabont returns after directing The Shawshank Redemption to direct another prison tale of sheer class and written again by Stephen King in their second attempt to make a another gem....John Coffey a simplistic gentle giant is accused of the murder of a little girl and is convicted to the death penalty on "The Green Mile" a short stretch of prison corridor where men meet there fate...whilst waiting strange things happen witnessed by the prison boss played by Tom Hanks together with a rather unusual mouse named Mr Jingles....Good versus evil, darkness versus light....The Green Mile is another classic film from a great duo who have scored another great success in a very emotional tale with both great joy and great sadness....For anyone looking for a classic film then look no further....

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful   March 6, 2008

This film is absolutely shocking and i would advise people to not bother sitting through three hours of this tediously superfical story. Those are three hours that you will never be able to get back. The characters are not developed or explored, its predcitable and stodgy and a complete waste of everybodys time! i cannot understand what the fuss was about and i could not believe that everybodys favorite 'good guy' Tom Hanks chose to play a part in such a stupid and unrealistic movie!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST   February 15, 2008
    A. Girvan (surrey United Kingdom)

THE ONLY COMPLAINT IS YOU HAVE TO BOOK TIME OFF WORK TO WATCH THIS BECAUSE IT SO LONNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

VERY VERY GOOD THOUGH - STEPHEN KING IS A GENIUS.

4 out of 5 stars Like the drink, but not spelt the same?   January 13, 2008
    Frank Candour (Cleveland)
King at his best. A truly heart wrenching tale of a lost soul cursed with an ability to absorb the ills of people at his own expense?
What lets it down is the lack of jaw dropping surprise at what Coffey reveals . Wetmore is the sadistic guard that must inhabit all institutions where power corrupts.
Delacroix's end is illuminatingly spectacular!!! Amazing and poignant, the whole film jerks the heart!
