Many were iffy about Wim Wenders' Faraway, So Close (available on video) and The End of Violence (also available on video), but those films have a lot going for them. The Million Dollar Hotel is the director's true "disasterpiece". The story, co-authored by U2's Bono, is fit only for Bonio dog biscuits, and lead-performer Jeremy Davies is as annoying as anyone ever has been on screen. Spiky-haired semi-cracked Tom-Tom (Davies) takes a running jump off the top of the eponymous refuge for Los Angeles deadbeats, then flashes back to the aftermath of the last fatal fall from the hotel, taken by his junkie friend (played by Tim Roth in a climactic flashback). The hotel is shaken up by the arrival of FBI Special Agent Detective Skinner (Mel Gibson), a maniac in a back-brace who turns out to have had a functional third arm amputated. Other resident weirdoes include saintly slut and bibliophile Milla Jovovich, bogus-Indian artist Jimmy Smits, mad hooker Amanda Plummer and bogus Liverpudlian Peter Stormare (who claims to be a lost Beatle). Just when you think it can't get worse, Julian Sands shows up. Ugly, hectoring and trite. --Kim Newman

Firstly i just want to say that i don't like U2 and woundn't know Bono if he smacked me in the face, normally anything to do with him I'd run a mile from. Because of this i feel i can give an independent view of the film without it coming thought Bono/U2 loving specs.
I caught this film on BBC2 the other night and really enjoyed it, i thought the acting was excellent and the story very good, the John Lennon bloke was a bit annoying but i thought the main cast members of Jeremy Davies & Milla Jovovich played there parts excellently.
The comments from other viewers of 1 star are totally unjust, I imagine these people the sort that gave "the Godfather 2" 1 star because it was "Boring".
It definetly a film i would watch again.

it is the best film I have seen for a very long time and if I ever to make the list of the world best movies I may really consider this film as one.
It may seem a little too pretentious to start with especially for those who are not used to European cinema but trust the film: all your doubts about it will disappear. The twists of the plot, the exceptionally good shooting and absolutely great music will win you over.
It is definitely not a simple detective story. It is a very serious movie that explores human nature and raises the most basic questions of human life: love, friendship, money, ambition etc - the trivial questions. But the way the film raises them makes all these trivial things so meaningful and touching.
The actors are great. I think it is the best role of Mila Iovovich. The contrast of personalities of two main male characters creates the futuristic anti utopian world of the film in the beginning and later this very contrast proves how insufficient is the shape and the image as the new contrast getting built up: between them and the others.
There is only one thing that I can mention as a bit of frustrating in the film: the main character's mumbling. But perhaps we do not need to hear every word, anyway :)
Great film! Highly recommended to anyone who is not afraid of serious cinematography and want a wonderful visual and musical experience.

This film gripped me from its first opening scenes. It's beautifully shot, matched with a great soundtack and with superb acting throughout, especially from Jeremy Davies. The Million Dollar Hotel is somewhere I never want to be but it is a place that fascinates and disturbs as do the inhabitants and the story that revolves around them. It brilliantly handles the idea of perfect innocent love in an environment that resembles the more hellish and insane side of life. It's tragic, darkly amusing and thought-provoking, it's a film that broke my heart and to be honest its rare that a movie these days can have that much of an effect on me. This film is one that needs to be watched more than once in order to pick up on all its observations and intricate details. I think it's fair to say that it will not appeal to everyone but if you get a chance to see it, do. It is a film that with so many merits and I am amazed that until recently I had heard so little about it. I think its wonderful.

From the evocative name, stylish jacket and big names involved you might think this is going to be a cool detective story and lyrical, cinematic spiritual journey, and it was on that basis that I rented it for our Saturday night in. Fifteen stupid pointless minutes of irritating nonsense later we switched it off in disgust and my reputation as a video chooser was tarnished forever. The rest of the evening was spent flipping channels between wildlife documentaries and Starbase SG1 without talking much. The thing that did it, on top of all the mumbling wacky squatters who don't look like squatters in a filmset squat that is not like any real squat, was the mumbling wacky hippy who believes he is one of the Beatles and, even more tragically, believes he can do what we can only imagine is a John Lennon accent without it sounding like a mixture of South African, Australian, and Martian. As well as being a quarter as funny and four times as tedious as Wim Wenders and possibly Bono think this is, it is an insult to anyone who has ever, well, existed. What happens in the film from this point onwards I shall never know, or care.
