Amazon.co.uk Review When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with cliches, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

The Film V The Book August 13, 2008 Denise Howard I was very impressed with the book by Nicolas Sparks that I placed a review on Amazon last year. I realised that there was now a film adapted from the book, but I was very reluctant to watch it as in my experience the film is always a disappointment because there are always large chuncks taken away from the original story. Then I was told to watch this film as it was so beautiful. It was amazing and I was in tears as the film unfolded. There are some changes as I expected but the atmosphere and sincerety of the book is captured in this movie. I do recommend if you haven't read the book to do so, the book has a beautiful poetic feel and you will appreciate this film even more. And still make sure you have some tissues because I cried reading it.
truly beautiful August 3, 2008 Ms. A. Robinson (derbyshire) i saw this film about 5 years ago and enjoyed it, since then i have read the book on which the movie is based (along with many others by nicholas sparks). i have just rewatched the movie and i cried and laugh through most of it. it is a truly beauitful story, and the movie is just as good as the book. i would recommend anyone who enjoys this story to read the follow-up book called 'the wedding' which is about ali & noahs daughter and her family (cant give too much away) which is equally as beautiful.
Touching! July 12, 2008 Aj (Basingstoke, U.K) Although I don't usally like these sort of films this was brilliant! Touching & heartwarming! Ryan Gosling was amazing & i don't think they could get anyone else to play the part as well as he did!
A Romance May 31, 2008 lazylinguist A "then-and-now" romance presented through flashbacks and readings (from the "Notebook") by an aging James Garner to a dementia patient. The love-story starts in a WW2 southern US summer and unfolds through the reading. The star-crossed young lovers are entirely convincing and very-well portrayed. With a bitter-sweet, predictable storyline, this is a curl-up-on-the-sofa, wet Sunday afternoon film with some lovely photography. Keep a tissue to hand!
Amazing May 27, 2008 Nightlover (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I didn't expect to like this film and the first 10 - 15 minutes I was a little bored, but as the story progressed I fell right into it and was totally engrossed. It was a beautiful film, an amazing story. I cried my eyes out and kept thinking about it for several days after I saw it. I highly recommend it.
