How is it possible to feel nostalgia for a world I never knew? August 7, 2008 Andy Millward (Broxbourne, Herts, UK) To the reviewer who posed the question of whether I would have preferred half an hour of this magnificent film to have ended up on the cutting room floor, I can give an emphatic reply: absolutely not! I loved every second and could have carried on watching for longer, days if necessary!! I was never bored for a moment, ironic given my self-acknowledge low boredom threshold. Why? Everywhere you look there is beauty: for starters, the sheer scale and grandeur of the breathtaking Patagonian scenery in recreating this epic journey, which during the final scenes where the hero swims a river never before swum to get to the leper colony reminded me in some small measure of Werner Herzog's madcap adventures in the Amazon. In the creation, the director, cast and crew have made a cherished dream of a road movie. Witness the gorgeous cinematography, the finely-judged script and the excellent performances from every member of the cast. Even the 1939 Norton 500 bikes used were lovingly restored. And as the film meanders along the journey, you are aware that this was for Che a life-changing experience, one that opened his eyes to the world and ultimately made him the man he went on to be. His friend cares primarily about the women he meets en route, but Che outgrows his medical studies, his beautiful girlfriend, his previous life. This is truly riveting cinema, better than a thousand action-packed Hollywood epics. Go see and appreciate every subtle moment of genius. This is real cinema!
Incredible - film making at it's very best May 18, 2008 Tonkfan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of those films I've kept meaning to watch, but in all honestly, wasn't really that keen, but having seeing it for the first time last night, I just had to go out and buy it this morning (sorry Amazon, I couldn't wait for it to be delivered). Impeccable acting, great camera work, genuinely touching without ever being sickly, this is a truly beautiful film. Laugh out loud funny in places, it will move you to tears in others. Gael Garcia Bernal once again excels in another superior road movie that's even better than the glorious Y tu mama tambien. His performance is equalled by the endearing Rodrigo De La Serna and the people of all the countries they visit. I found the camera work excellent and the landscapes worthy supporting actors. And I have to defend the film from those who criticise it for not concentrating more on scenery - this is a primarily people driven story, concerned with humanity rather than beautiful vistas, and gives a voice to local people who have had their land and livelihood stolen. It also non-judgementally contrasts the exuberance of two privileged young men taking time out to make the trip of a lifetime, with brutality and impoverished existences of many of those they meet along the way. If you only ever watch one sub-titled film, please make it this one. I don't speak the language, but unlike another reviewer, I didn't find it at all problematic.
Che terrific. April 27, 2008 lesto (Kent, UK) Absolutly compelling viewing, sub titles a little off putting but no real issue. Have watched it twice in a week. Its a shame I could have watch more and more but it ends. The extras are well worth it as well. If you interested in this kind of history this gives you a true insight into just what got Che's clock ticking. Che terrific.
Don't let the subtitles put you off - a real treat. March 19, 2008 Sizzle (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Like many people, I think twice about a film where I have to read the dialogue but I'm so glad I watched this. Based on the book of the same name, it portrays Che Guevara's journey through South America & the way that experience shaped his attitude towards society. It's also a story of love & friendship & has many moments which make you reflect on what the world would be like if we didn't all seem to be chasing the dollar. A thought provoking film which also has an interesting soundtrack.
Grandiose promises badly delivered February 22, 2008 Rossella Spoto (london, UK) 1 out of 8 found this review helpful
This movie over-promises, it has a bit of everything but does not fully communicate eventually. Was it about beautiful south-american landscape?? Better watching a proper full-length documentary on Chile or Peru instead. An extremely hollow or light description of the idol of generations - Ernesto. Again, a well done historic documentary would make justice of him - and many do. Flat movie, not engaging. Disappointing.
