    5 out of 5 stars A tottally wonderful TV series! A real must-watch!   August 16, 2008

I absolutely loved it!!! I can't wait for the second series! I thought it was funny, loveable, caring, and heart-warming! If you liked Desperate Housewives, then you will love this even more!!!

    I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Great drama, but needs some comic relief.   May 29, 2008

I originally got this on rental as I had just finished watching Ally McBeal and wanted to see what Calista Flockhart got up to next. I hadn't realised that this was a drama and so was initially disappointed to see her in such a different role, but the characters were all so well written and so honest about themselves, and the change in pace for someone like Flockhart was great. My only criticism was that it was just a little too real, drama could do with taking a leaf out of Shakespeare and include some real comedy motif to prevent the mood from being too overwhelming and sadly I didn't find that the script gave enough in this area to enable me to watch it continually.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly crafted characters   May 23, 2008

This reviewer is incredibly biased, I'm sorry but anything with Sally Field in it just has to be good so I knew I would like this from the start. One of the many truisms of American cinema is "when Sally Field cries, America cries". Field is the formidable matriarch of a family that gives her plenty to cry about. Whether clashing with her conservative daughter Kitty or her smothering of youngest son Justin she plays her role -the liberal, opinionated, compassionate, Democratic feminist whose only job in life was wife and mother superbly.

But Field is just the head of an excellent (beautiful) cast. The show is witty and fast paced but what shines through is the depth of the characters, there is no tokenism here, all characters are inherently flawed, yet all incredibly human and likeable. This especially rings true for Kevin Walker, openly gay and yet his relationships, and his failure in those relationships in Season 1 are treated exactly the same as his straight brothers and sisters, no better or worse - merely human.

The show has been renewed for a 3rd season - here's to many more wonderful episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic writing, brilliant acting - a must have DVD.   April 9, 2008

This has to be one of my favourite shows on television. Every episode I find my self laughing then five minutes later on the verge of tears. It is a classical family drama with enough problems in one episode to fill a year but the magic is that is manages to do this without seeming unrealistic.

Major credit goes to the superb writers - every episode is full of wit and charm with plenty of emotional moments also. They bring together the best of the old and the best of the new, intelligently and seamlessly confronting the issues of homosexuality, the war in Iraq and infidelity.

Of course enormous credit is also due to the incredible cast! Sally Field is tremendous as the bossy yet unbelievably loving and caring mother. In addition, Calista Flockhart plays the witty, intelligent and loveable Kitty with warmth - a truly great actress - Rachel Griffiths and Matthew Rhys also deserve extra credit for the flawless accents and the humour/wit (especially from Rhys) that they bring to the show. Balthazar Getty, along with Dave Annable play Tommy and Justin Walker with such talent that they make it seem easy. These actors all have tremendous chemistry that they make the Walker family come alive.

Credit also to the 'additions to the family' - Ron Rifkin, Patricia Wettig, Sarah Jane Morris, Emily VanCamp, John Pyper-Ferguson and the amazingly talented two children, Kerris and Maxwell who play Paige and Cooper perfectly.

Finally a mention to Rob Lowe - an unbelievable actor who is heart-wrenchingly good looking and who came into the series as if he had been there from the start. The chemistry between himself and Calista Flockhart is magical and made me believe anyway, that after just one episode, Kitty and Robert were made for each-other!

Even if US Television hasn't always been your favourite, you must try this out. Don't let any form of prejudice stop you - my DVD collection would be missing something special without it.
