northanger abbey May 7, 2008 Jenny (Western Australia) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Yes, it was witty and enjoyable. I am glad that I have added this to my Austen Collection. Loved the photography in Bath. I wasn't so impresed with the acting but overall a good interpretation. Our Jane was quite a racy woman.
fantastic- especially for those who dont want anything heavy! May 6, 2008 J. Mason (Leeds, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
really really good- a classic period drama. a very good buy if you are a teenager trying to widen reading etc, my advice is watch this first then read the novel. it's fairly light and short, and the dvd is really easy to understand and touching. really nice to watch, i loved it. go buy it!!
THE MOST POWERFUL ADAPTATION May 1, 2008 Domenico Del Coco I loved this version and all ITV version of Jane Austen's classics. Carey Mulligan, JJ Feild and Felicity Jones made a fantastic action in this movie. I believe you don't buy only this but buy all Jane Austen's Season feat Billie Piper, Kate Beckinsale and Sally Hawkins's Persuasion. You enjoy and spend well time viewing fantastic ITV Jane Austen's Classics. YOU MUST OWN IT! Domenico Del Coco
Beautiful, beautiful beautiful! April 26, 2008 Mary Kruger 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Since you are reading this review, you are obviously considering purchasing this Northanger Abbey production. In that case, I recommend it whole-heartedly. The photography is lovely and the acting is fresh and charming throughout, enhancing the fact that the story is about being young and getting out to see a bit of the world. Those of you who have read the book know that the strongest character is actually the narrator, who, though ever-polite, oozes sarcastic distain of the "typical" romance novel in every chapter while unapologetically telling the absolutely simple story of her perfectly ordinary protagonists. In this production (although a narrator is not needed in film) a nod is made her existence with relatively soft-spoken cameo "appearances" at the beginning and the end. I like to think that I am intellectual, and I know that I am a romantic sap, and this "Northanger Abbey" appeals to both head and heart (although, if I am completely honest, more to the latter than the former). I spend most of the time with an ear to ear grin as I watch the young and silly characters being young and silly. Then I cry when Cathy tells her mother that she has fallen in love. Also the costumes and dances and all the other trappings of a period production are all very pretty and true to style. I give this Northanger Abbey 2 thumbs up.
Captures the book perfectly! April 24, 2008 Elizabeth Simmons (Brentwood, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had a smile on my face from start to end. I found this adaptation a perfect accompaniment to the book. Obviously the story line had to be condensed to fit into the time restraint, but everything you wanted was there. I loved seeing Catherine's fantasies come to life. The adorable relationship between Catherine and Mr Tilney was captured perfectly by the actors. Isabella was exactly how I imagined and was played brilliantly by the actress. One of my favourite Jane Austen adaptations!
