5 out of 5 stars The Best that Indian Cinema Can Produce.   July 4, 2007

In Indian cinema if you had to say pick one film which stands out and which is the best of the best it has to be Sholay, still running in Mumbai after 30 years. Its a gem i know many indians will say what about Raj Kapoors films but you cant put it with this, in the black market this made millionaires of everyone who had a copy to sell, but thankfully now its on DVD for people to enjoy again and again.
The story is old as the day, based on the 12 samurai and the magnificent seven, Ramesh Sippy came out with a indian version, two crooks who help a local policeman to save his village from the bandit, so simple really but like Yul Brynner and steve mcqueen before them its the actors who make it brillient, and what a pairing Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, then the rest of the cast Sanjeev Kumar, hema malini, amjad khan as 'gabbar singh'. the songs were also super a mix of modern song and old, yeh dosti still sung today, if you are a indian when you can understand hindi you are told to see Sholay it is that simple, I saw it when I was 5 years old. even the words of the movie have been put into vocals on a ordinary cassette tape(remember them).
Some facts also which need to be told here, Amitabh Bachchan had to plead to Ramesh Sippy to play Jai, he was not first choice at the time as he was very new to Bollywood, first choice had been Shatrughan Sinha. And as AB was new he actually slept in the hotel with the rest of the crew believe or not the five star treatment was given to obviously Dharmendra and Hema who were in romance at the time.
Anyway a classic so get it.Simple.

In timeless classic bollywood tradition this movie is by far one of the best ever made, acting, singing, dancing and one of the best soundtracks you can lay your hands on. My partner(who's english) had never seen a hindi film before and was so taken back by it,laughing and crying along with the movie.

if this movie was released today it would still be a smash.

If you love movies, watch this....

After watching this film, you will want to watch it over and over again. Very good acting by amitabh and dharmendra. But the best has to be amjad khan as 'gabbar singh'. Dialogues and action were top class.

have u seen this film? if not then you've wasted your life. the biggest stars give thier best performances of thier careers. great action, comedy, romance, soundtrack... and i hate bollywood films! no big budget fluff here, just pure storytelling. it tops my five best films of all time, the others being: the godfather, ghandi, goodfellas, and annie hall
