5 out of 5 stars Brilliant First Tripod   April 7, 2008

This is my first tripod and im going to be using it mainly for camcorder usage but also it can be used with still cameras.

Its really nice and sturdy with thick legs. Ive seen a couple pics of other makes of tripods and the legs look really thin and flimsy! not the case on this tripod!

Nice little spirit level is a good feature and really does go from being small to being big! it comes to just above my eye level when fully extended legs and the head cranked up all the way with the neat little lever, and im around 5"9

Now im using a Sanyo Xacti HD700 on it at the moment and thats a really small and light video camera! but the tripod still provides quite smooth panning and tilting! It will be better with a larger, heavier video camera.

I bought a Sony DCR SR 52 for my wife's birthday and want to get a tripod she can use with it. Is the VCT suitable.?

Or if not is there one that would do the job

    Thanks

    Rob

Sturdy, adjustable and easy to use. I have been using this for over a year now and have no complaints.

My first tripod!! Just got it few mins. ago (ordered 5pm 2 days ago - from KK Electronics) and its everything and more than expected! With everything extended, its taller than me! LOL (i'm just 5'1" anyway) Despite being very light, it feels very sturdy! Even comes with operating instructions! Loving the fact that the angle of the pad can tilt to 90 degrees... perfect for those portraits! Just wish it came with a carry on bag, this would have the perfect! Nevertheless, very very pleased!!

    Edit:
Just to add, my quick release plate unscrewed itself when I left it on the camera while it was around my neck. It must have been an odd one because the second unit I bought fastens firmly. Anyway, Sony doesn't sell replacement release plates. Took a chance on the Hama Quick Release Plate for Tripods Star 55/56/57 with Videopin, and it fits perfectly! May this be helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent   September 2, 2007

Ok, having bought this as a first-time tripod I thought you might like to know a few details. Firstly, when the legs are fully extended it takes up a triangular footprint with each side being 95cm. With the central column unextended, the full leg extension gives you a height of 115cm. Extending the wind-up central column gets you up to 145cm in height.

    So far, so good.

However, a few negatives to note. First, the tilt and pan action doesn't have a satisfying damped action. It's not jerky by any means, but it just isn't creamy smooth, so you tend to grip the tripod arm a little more than you have to, to compensate. Also, because of the tripod's light weight (just over 1 kg), when you wind-up the central column the whole tripod wobbles a little bit on its legs, so you have to place your spare hand on one of the legs to steady it. Not a problem between shots, but if you're ratcheting it up mid-filming, it's a bit of a pain.

I give it 4 stars though, because it is well put together, and Sony give you a spirit level and a 90-degree tilt on the platform for portrait shots. If, like me, what you're looking for is a means of steadying your family snapshots on the go, I would personally recommend going for a monopod instead.
