THIS REVIEW IS VIDEO ONLY April 22, 2008 E. Biggs (Buckinghamshire) This tripod is a steal. I got it for only 15 delivered from Banford Trading. The tripod is light, comes in its own bag, has a removable but very plasticky quick-release base to avoid unscrewing it each time and is able to support modest camcorders. A variable height adjuster with winding handle is a good addition. However, this is where the good news ends for videographers. The big problem with this tripod relates to panning motions - it is jerky as the plastic bearing surfaces slip then grip and greasing won't help as part of the problem is that the central shaft of the tripod twists slightly as you pan aswell. The vertical axis has a smooth motion but panning is a big no-go! If you only need to set up the camera and leave it then this is cheap and works but ANY panning is a waste of time. Sorry but don't make the same mistake if you need to record movement. I'm keeping it but I'll carry on looking for a better one (probably more expensive too!)
Not bad for first timer like me February 3, 2008 D. Kelly (Glasgow) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am just beginning with photography, more of a new hobby. I have taken a few night time shots and knew I needed a tripod to get better results. However, being a beginner I dont see the point in buying something expensive. So I decided to buy this Hama Star 61 Tripod. The camera sits on it very well. it has a very easy quick release. The tripod can give you landscape or portrait angles and anything in between. The tripod is not the heaviest but it is sturdy enough to hold your camera still. This also extends from what I thought was a small tripod to something I can stand up and use without bending over. Its cheap..... but the minus points would be that although you can pan across quite easily if you release the lock nut slightly (for camcorders), but to move the camera to face down or up is a bit more stiff. At first I was a bit annoyed at this, then realised that as long as its a bit stiffer my camera wont move. If your a beginner or on a very tight budget, then I think this would be a good place to start to improve shots, and so you can save for a better tripod in the future if needed.
breakable November 19, 2006 Z. Gollop (London) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
i was happy with this product until after less than six months it broke !! the plastic clips on the legs are too flimsy, got for a tougher tripod IMO
My first tripod July 13, 2006 mitchbucanon (uk) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Given the price, this little bit of kit has easily surpassed my low expectations. Whilst I wouldnt describe the build as rugged it is well constructed (albeit plastic componentry with aluminium legs) and peforms superbly with my Canon 350D. I'd highly recommend this for any enthusiastic amateur on a budget.
Fragile; problems with panning May 4, 2006 domboshawa (UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I had problems with this tripod. The first one delivered was damaged in transit and the replacement would not pan smoothly. Some reviewers are happy with this product and, indeed, the first (damaged) one did pan OK, but the panning problem with the replacement was not a one-off - looking back thorugh the reviews, others have had the same problem. On the plus side, ordering this product gave me an opportunity to experience Amazon's excellent handling of returns of damaged or faulty items. If you have a printer, Amazon provides a pre-paid return label so you don't have to get a refund for the postage. Also, they didn't wait for the returned item to reach them before sending a replacement (in the first instance) or processing the refund (in the second) - they did it immediately. Therefore, if you decide to take a chance on buying this product, you can at least be confident that Amazon will handle it professionally if the panning is faulty.
