Ouch was the first word which came to mind when I agreed to review this product. I've been a long time wax convert, I can't bear to mess around with shaving every day, but I could do without the trips to the local Salon and letting the beautician enjoy inflicting pain on me on a Saturday when I'd rather be anywhere but there! (Should probably let you know I did try waxing at home on a few occasions but it's far too messy and really isn't that simple).
So back to the epilator, I read my very clear instructions, popped my cool pack into the freezer and tried to forget about epilating for a couple of hours. Few hours later collected one said cold cool pack and got my epilator out and put the suggested easy head on - I wasn't taking chances or trying to be a hero I started with the easy level. Mentioning heads here - they are really simple to change over - they just click in and out.
I popped the ice pack into the glove (supplied in pack) and held it onto my leg - the glove keeps your hand from getting cold, but cools your leg which is handy. Then the epilator - holding it at a 90 degree angle to my leg and moving from foot to knee, I really didn't know why I was making such a fuss, after the first few strokes, it really didn't hurt, I even stopped using the cool pack. The heads have massaging rollers on them which disguises any pain that epilating may cause.
I would suggest that if you are using the easy setting then do be patient and don't expect all hairs to disappear after the first stroke, it did feel a bit like mowing the lawn, as you have to go over the same area a few times, but this is only because you are on the easy setting, this is to get you used to epilators. I have since tried the higher level heads and they work much quicker, and no difference apart from speed of removal.
This version of the easy start also comes with attachments so you can epilate your face, (I tried this years ago - with not much success) but this little machine did the business just fine.
Few other points about this model - handy light on the front which lights the way and shows up all the hairs without having to turn on all the lights in your room. It plugs into the socket so you won't get caught short half way through without power. Comes with a handy little mesh bag to keep all the bit together.
Plus post epilation --tan still there and you can use this with much shorter hair than waxing, so no more horrible hairy legs. I'm a total convert now and would recommend this to anyone - waxer's or shavers - you're missing out. --Danielle Smith, Amazon.co.uk

I was most worried about the pain from an epilator and when this arrived I read and re-read the instructions rather than plug it in. When I eventually plucked (no pun intended) up courage to actually use the machine I couldn't have been more surprised - what a baby I am. Yes I could feel it but at worse it was a little discomfort but certainly not what you could call `pain'. I spend long periods of time abroad and in short skirts so now for ease I tend to have a full leg wax a day or two before leaving the UK and then once a week have a quick buzz with the epilator. Once a week might be a bit much for blondes or slow hair growth but I feel it makes it painless to be taking off half the hairs every week than waiting for two or three weeks and yanking the whole lot out. The waxing part is only my preference, the epilator is great but I just want a pampered start to my summer.
The only thing I would say against buying this particular model is that if you are not bothered about having smaller head attachments or a gel pack to put in the freezer (I have never used mine) then buy a cheaper Braun epilator so long as it has the 40 tweezers rather than the usual 20 or 22 that most other makes seem to have. This Braun epilator is a great product but has too many unnecessary gadgets adding to the price.

was a bit dubious about epilation but couldn't face another summer of shaving and am a big baby when it comes to waxing...
did my research and this one came out on top and i couldn't recommend it more highly, was quick, easy to use and apart from the first few minutes (till you get used to it) relatively painless. all the attachments do exactly what they say they do and its really easy to clean. i will NEVER EVER use any other hair removal method.

Please be aware when ordering this item that it appears the wrong picture and product description have been posted. The product I recieved does not come with a head for underarm and bikini line. I am told model 5580 is superceded with model 5585 which has a shaver/trimmer head instead. Amazon have now been notified inorder to amend the description.

I am extremely happy with my purchase. I bought this around an year and a half ago from amazon for a great bargain. It was for around Pounds 36/-
I have been using it since and have found it excellent. It's easy and convenient. It did hurt slightly for the first time but after that it was all okay. The light helps also. My skin is sensitive but I never had to use the cool pack. just follow whatever the instruction book says for product care, etc. It is my first epilator and I am so happy that I made the right decision as I was too busy to take out time for waxing appointments.

I've always shaved and got annoyed with it. So I decided to buy this epilator. I was expecting to be screaming in pain, but I didn't. Its a strange feeling but really bearable. My first time of using it, I did one stroke with the beginners head and went straight to the other one. I forgot about the ice pack. I was left with redness but that went down within 12 hours. This is well worth the money and I'm planning on using every week.
