They don't make them like they used to. June 10, 2008 C. J. Davis (Nigeria) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I grew up with my mother's regular use of a Prestige pressure cooker and lived in terror of her 15 minute stews. The kitchen ceiling was testament to her forgetfulness, a round dark stain, the combination of stews, beetroot juice etc. However it did work and lasted forever, inherited and now in use by a sibling. I was delighted to see a change of design meant they no longer blew their tops so to speak. However the Prestige Smartplus has been a total disappointment. I live in Nigeria, thought it just the thing to precook beef to enable one to swallow African beef fillet without 20 minutes of vigorous chewing. It was in several pieces when I purchased it and I had to assemble it. I cooked just 2 meals successfully and then it ceased to come up to pressure, steam just billowing out the sides. It has sat in the cupboard since then as there is no servicing/ parts available.
Pressure Cooking Novice June 10, 2008 Muffin (London) My Mother has had the old fashioned type of Prestige pressure cooker for many years, which I watched her use throughout my childhood. On a whim after watching Jamie Oliver use a similar style pressure cooker to this one, to make one of his soups. I thought this must be a buy for me. Have just used to make a mound of potatoes for a cottage pie. Then went on to use to cook a selection of vegetables, carrots, baby corn, french beans, sugarsnaps and courgettes all in one go. Wow, no steamed out kitchen, one pot washing up. Found this very easy to use. Read instructions carefully, must get cooker up to pressure before reducing heat. I think cooking times are a guide line and cook to own taste, this comes with practice and use.
Over-engineered. June 3, 2008 Mr. O. Lydiard 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Only two pressure levels, the higher being only 12psi, the 'reduced pressure' level not being specified at all. The simple 5lb, 10lb and 15lb weights on older pressure cookers were much more useful when looking up cooking times. The visual pressure indicator pops up to show when there is some pressure in the pot. Unfortunately the flawed design results in it usually sticking down and leaking steam, thus cooking pressure never being reached. Shaking the pan vigorously will get it to pop up and allow pressure to build. The "use & care instruction" booklet is woeful - for example the "pasta and pulses" cooking times section not mentioning any pulses at all. This item has lots of safety and 'user friendly' features, but you'll be able to cook better with an old pressure cooker.
Smartplus - It sure is ! :-) September 5, 2007 A. Sheikh (United Kingdom) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
When I gave my first pressure cooker(an older Prestige model model 10033 Quick n'Easy) to my mother, I wondered whether I would find another one as good as my original. I searched many shops on the high street and unfortunately they only sold the stainless steel models. I prefer the aluminium ones because when cooking curries or indeed using garlic and ginger in the pressure cooker, aluminium is better than stainless steel as foods such as these do not stick to the bottom of the aluminium pans in general. To be honest when I located the aluminium one on the internet, I was a bit cautious of the newer looking model due to the change in the design of the visual indicator and the new locking system. However, once it arrived and after carefully consulting the user manual, I was most impressed with the ease and use of this newer model. I have no regrets over this purchase and would highly recommend it to perspective buyers. The new unique locking system is exceptionally better than the older models and gives you the added peace of mind that it will resolve any abnormal pressures more safely. (Luckily I have not had any such problems). On my older model, I did have to order some spare parts, I went through the Prestige helpline number, and they provided me with a fast and efficient after sales service. Therefore, I felt assured that if anything was amiss with my new purchase I was confident it would be resolved. I have to add that I have had 'no' problems with the Prestige Smartplus cooker. It cuts down significantly on the time taken to tenderise meats, which was the primary reason for the purchase, it works just as splendidly on saving time on cooking vegetables in hurry. It's a God send for pulses!!!
Nice pressure cooker December 17, 2006 Cath 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
Nice pressure cooker, much more modern than my last one. It does everything it should do without any problems at all. Quite reasonably priced too. If you are looking to buy a pressure cooker then I would certainly recommend this one.
