 Hoping for a third album one day October 25, 2008

Well I just read a previous reviewer who doesn't like the track 'This Ship' but that's my favourite on the album ! Look, make your own mind up. I think this album is a definate progression from their first with great rock tracks and meaningful lyrics. Listen to the samples available on some sites & if you like them, buy the album. Don't try to annlyze the thing, its art, if the songs make you dream then its a great album and I think it is.

I wont lie to you, I bought their first album and totally hated it.
I love this album however, and really felt I should write a review upon seeing the unfair average rating this has received so far.
The guy that did the ridiculous screaming on the first album has gone - and so has the rubbish song writing.
I am not the kind of person who judges music by lyrics (unless they are glaringly awful like 'I am a mountain, I am the sea'), so maybe I am wrong in saying that the lyrics on this album are totally inoffensive. I am sure I am not wrong in saying that this album is jam packed with well written, catchy, melodic rock songs that you wont want to skip.

The Automatic exploded onto the scene in 2006 with their debut 'Not Accepted Anywhere' which delivered nothing but mildly irritating yet catchy songs with the most terrible lyrics I've probably heard, which to be honest, was enough to keep me and the crowd happy at the time. Now they return with their new album 'This Is A Fix' which I have to say, mostly contains all the traits from the previous record, bad lyrics but the ability to be able to write a decent pop song. Although the overall singing is much better on this record than its previous and with Pennie's departure his irritating, if it can be called this, 'screaming' did as well. But generally speaking 'This Is A Fix' is very mediocre in its production and its sound, this record will either be a hit or a miss and unfortunately for me, with the exception of a few songs, this album doesn't interest me.
The first offering on this album which deals with the drunk and disorderly on the streets and matters on binge drinking, 'Responsible Citizen' is definately one of my favourites from the album because the beat is highly addictive, it gives the song a faster pace and leads into one of their most predictable yet catchiest choruses. Moving swiftly on to the forever addictive single 'Steve McQueen' where the drumwork is actually somewhat impressive, and plastered over that a barrage of heavy guitars and Robin Hawkins declaring "I was the teenage Steve McQueen, my best performance escaped me". Basically the perfect choice of single for the record! 'Accessories' makes a bid to complain about the record industry and produces pleasing results with a decent beat, technical guitar work and heavy riffs. 'Magazines' is something different for the band, somewhat an experimental of sound which needless to say is very impressive which is basically and attack at reporters and magazine editors and is probably one of their most catchiest songs (with decent lyrics =O) in their career!
Unfortunately this is where faulter and this is where the music gets progressively worse, 'This Ship' for one, is one of their most irritating songs of their career, it is dull, unimaginative and a poor attempt at a decent pop song as the chorus is beyond terrible. The trend carries on for 'In The Mountains', 'This Is A Fix', 'Bad Guy' and 'Sleepwalking' and this is the main problem with the album! For every decent song which is produced on the album, it gets counteracted with something which is bland, boring or is ruined by the poor quality of lyrics. Although there is still some hope for this record when 'Secret Police' charges in and shows how a decent, true pop song is meant to be written, without all the gimmicks of cheesy lyrics and synths which have plagued them ever since their first single 'Monster' on their debut. "What's that coming over the hill........" is now "The freedom to say whatever we like, replaced with the recital of lines" See now isnt that so much better? 'Make The Mistakes' is a fair song, its nothing brilliant but acts rather as a filler and the closer 'Light Entertainment' ends on rather a disappointing note as they return to the mantra of the boring and bland guitars yet again to create a disorganised racket....not the best way to end an album I must say.
Not the best return for The Automatic but if your in need of a quick fix this will do just fine.

The Automatic are growing up. Their second album has a more mature and brilliantly layered new sound, which probably has something to do with the addition of Yourcodenameis:Milo singer Paul. There's no "Monster" (though, as proven at Reading '08, it is still an epic crowd-pleaser), but instead we get heavier tracks such as "This Is A Fix" and "Steve McQueen". A hint of their evolving sound is most obvious in my personal favourite, "Magazines", which sounds like nothing they've ever done before.
From being the NME's darlings, to "Monster", to NME ridiculing them as they're not "nu-rave" or whatever it is NME are currently obsessing over, The Automatic have a fantastically solid new album.
