5 out of 5 stars Love It   December 1, 2008
    Sally
I am a McFly fan, I'm 38 years old and I love this album. I have to say that it took a while to grow on me compared with their others which were instantly catchy but now I have heard this a few times I think that every track is a classic. Unlike some albums where only one song is enjoyable. I would recommend anyone to buy this album, even my husband likes it compared with McFly's other tracks as it is rockier. I love their lyrics and think that they are talented instrumentalists. Buy this CD you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars A band going from strength to strength   November 17, 2008
    down-right-mysical (England)
The first and most important thing I have to say about McFly, is 'don't judge a book by its cover'. It's a saying many fans use in relation to this band, and it applies more truly to them, I would say, than any other band I can think of on the British music scene today.

McFly started out with a first album, that was passable, at best. I was all of thirteen or fourteen when it was released, and it struck me as nothing more than a bit childish, musicians who were still learning how to write good songs who ended up pandering to popular taste to gain success on the back of the pre-teen Busted-mania wave.

Since that questionable first album, however, they have gone from strength to strength, always striving to make the next album better, to be more true to themselves. Their second album, Wonderland, would have proved to anyone who bothered to compare it to the previous album that these boys were growing up, and growing in talent. However, by that point many had already confined them to the `boy band' pigeon hole (more because of their hoards of screaming female fans than because of their music, if we're honest with ourselves), and they weren't given the chance they deserved, and hence the next album, while still far superior musically to their initial attempt, regressed somewhat in the seriousness of its subject matter.

After that, I thought that would be it for my interest in McFly; I thought i'd `grow out' of them. And then came this album, and it completely blew me away. This album is proof of so many things: that these boys have grown up, have developed phenomenally as musicians, and that when they are recording independently of big-wig money-grabbing record executives, they really can make meaningful, impressive, enjoyable music. Even if you've never listened to McFly before, even if you've listened to them and not enjoyed it, give this album a try and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Here is a album, at last, which allows these boys to prove themselves, as they have been striving to do for years, as credible musicians. I've still only given it four stars, instead of five, however, for a few reasons: One, because 'One for the Radio' is a song I was completely not impressed by. Despite the truth in the message of it, I find it out of place with the rest of the album. It's that little bit too 'poppy' and mainstream sounding to fit with some of the better content of the album, like 'POV', 'Corrupted' and 'The Last Song'. Two, I find the DVD accompaniment a tad unnecessary. That's the kind of content I'd like to be able to find on their website, on the off-chance I might want to watch it, not something I want to pay for.

And finally, I'm still not going to call this album perfect. I love it, I do. Mostly I love the fact that this album displays the musical ability these boys have that makes them justified in singing the lyrics `Bury me with my guitar and all the way to hell I'll play' - it proves them as musicians without a doubt, BUT I still want to think they can do better. I still think they are a band that can and will continue to develop their music, constantly searching for perfection. While this is great, they can still do better. I'm expecting great things.

to jiinyus and adam reed... you obvious wouldn't know a good album if it slapped you across the chops. i'm 47, yes 47, but if i was 20 again, i would be proud to release an album as good as this. their entire back catalogue is a testament to their skills as songwriters and musicians and this offering is no exception. in 5, or even 10 years time, when all the hype and "boy band" labelling rubbish is just history, this will STILL be a good album. if you like good modern rock music, get it. if you're happy with leona lewis warbling out of your speakers at you like some whitney houston/mariah carey lovechild/clone, then you know what to do.

I can't believe these guys are still around, they've never made a good album. EVER. They are completely devoid of any talent, they can't play their instruments, their "lyrics" are uninspired... I wish people would open their eyes, stop listening to this atrocious band, and start enjoying decent music.

And to the fans of this album, before you begin your torrent of abuse (really, if a band are good, you shouldn't have to defend them...) I'd just like to inform you that yes, I unfortunately have had the displeasing experience of listening to this garbage (I work in a music shop). I gave it a shot, listened without prejudice, and also wrote this unbiased review expressing my opinions. It's pure trash and I hope never to hear it again. Widen your music taste people - it will only do you good.
