The Complete EMI Recordings July 30, 2008

There's very little that I could add to what previous reviewer "Unsmart" has said except that the set has 10 previously unreleased songs,10 songs in first-time-ever stereo, 2 previously unreleased versions,and three selections that had previously been released only on vinyl(on obscure U.S.A. & Canada albums).
The first 3 discs go through the complete sessionography in mono sound, and Disc four presents a representative sampling of 34 of the group's stereo mixes.
I'm slightly disappointed that the stereo mix of "You're No Good" isn't included on the stereo disc(though the mix is easily available on other CD's), and that the bizzare stereo mix of "Long Tall Sally" IS included(in that mix, an instruments left/vocals right mix, the right channel simply shuts off during the guitar solo, probably to elimanate some unwanted noises on the vocal track).
Some will note with disappointment that the group's 1966 EMI/Electrola German live album isn't included. But that album was problematic in two ways: the group didn't play any of its' hits, and only 8 of the 11 songs were actually live.
You'll also note that the tape speed fluctuations that have been present in the German language version of "Tutti Frutti" since the original EMI German 7" single are still present.
Hollies fans will appreciate that several of the previously unreleased songs feature lead vocals by Terry Sylvester.

How I've been longing for something like this to be released. Swinging Blue Jeans is one of my favourite bands from the 60's. Please note that the 5 stars above are just for those of you who already like SBJ and want to hear everything they recorded. If you're new to this band then you might wanna start with a single disc collection.
But anyway:
CD 1-3 contains every song SBJ ever recorded in chronological order based on recording dates. Including their Canadian only album "Don't make me over" from 1966 and a rare instrumental track included on their US only album "Hippy hippy shake" from 1964. Many of the tracks were not released at all back then, but are still worth listening to.
CD 4 contains stereo versions of a seemingly random pick of songs. I consider this disc as just a bonus. (Everything on CD 1-3 is in mono.)
All in all, there's not much you could criticise here really. They could have omitted the German versions of 4 songs, they are just kind of in the way. But they are of course easy to skip with a simple press of a button. So if you like this band and want to hear it all, then you've come to the right place.
