    Amazon.co.uk Review
Given the lullaby that Richard Thompson wrote to commemorate his son's birth ("There's nothing at the end of the rainbow/There's nothing to grow up for anymore"), Teddy Thompson turned out reasonably cheerful. True, when the British folk-rock legend's son sings "It's not so much that you left/It's that you didn't come back" on "A Step Behind", you can hear echoes of dad's droll delivery, melancholy modes and waltz-time signatures. But Teddy's voice is sweeter than his pop's, whether crooning on the Crowded House-like "Wake Up", harmonising with Rufus Wainwright on "So Easy" or even dropping allusions to letter bombs and freebasing on the wry "Thanks A Lot". With tasteful musical assistance from producer Joe Henry's band (as well as dad Richard), this eponymous debut is a low-key introduction to a rock offspring worth hearing. --Bill Forman

Just too mainstream, there are far more interesting things going on in the undergrowth - for a comparison I recommend Nick Worrall. His album is FREE to download as well.

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the `poster boy' artwork and dive into a fine debut collection from a major talent.   June 15, 2008

Those guys at record companies really don't have a clue do they ? On the cover they're trying to sell Teddy T as some kind of teen pin-up, with awful trendy graphic design into the bargain. The contents within are so much more mature and timeless. In anticipation of his forthcoming album I remembered I had this, his debut from 2000 and dug it out. It's wonderful ! I couldn't believe the quality of songwriting and singing here. Teddy has a superb naturally emotive voice and a beautiful way with a sung melody. Dad Richard is immediately identifiable on guitar and weaves some delicious curlicues around the vocals throughout the album. (If you're a Richard Thompson fan it's worth buying for his fantastic solos alone, they're that good). Having one of the greatest living guitar players at your disposal must be great, but this is very much TT's album, with really accessible songs strong enough to make it extremely puzzling how he hasn't made a larger dent with the public so far. There's a really great bunch of backing musicians here too, it sounds natural, woody and magnificent. There are tinges of steel guitar, piano, and brass all making this a fantastic listen.

Particularly notable are opener `Wake Up' which immediately grabs you and hooks you in, `So Easy' a fantastic tune sung with close friend Rufus Wainwright and `A Step Behind' a real beauty in 3/4 time. The art of great songwriting for me is sounding like nothing else and yet familiar at the same time and these tracks nail it totally. Track 3 `Brink Of Love' is absolute perfection. Really one of the best constructed songs I've ever heard.

OK there are maybe a couple of so-so tunes here, but nothing you'd really want to skip. It's a thoroughly enjoyable album, and great when the real stand outs come around again !

It's interesting that in a previous review on here the writer has picked an entirely different three or four songs as the standouts. Something for everyone here, then.

If you're new to Teddy T it's possibly best to start with the magnificent follow up `Separate Ways', but this really isn't far behind. Truly accomplished stuff.

4 out of 5 stars More ordinary than his dad, and yet . . .   March 26, 2006

. . . definitely worth buying. He can't write a lyric like his dad, his voice isn't even a quarter as interesting as his dad's, and he's lucky enough to have his dad play guitar for him here - and NOBODY can play guitar like his dad - but this is a very good pop album. Don't expect anything deep and dark, don't expect a glimpse into the abyss: expect to feel good. While Richard is dark, Teddy is light. But Teddy's good at what he does too. Definitely one of the better albums you'll hear this year.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good   December 20, 2001

Quite an impressive debut, given the weight of expectation that must have been on him, although I had expected his guitar playing to be a bit more advanced due to those precious genes! The smooth arrangements are given power by some ragged guitar solos from his dad, + good supporting vocals from his high-profile chums. One thing that annoys me though is that his voice is just slightly out of tune!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful chip of the old block!   October 30, 2001

I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about buying this, being a big fan of his father...But I need'nt have worried. Teddy is a class songwriter, wonderful songs that have you humming along straight away, plus some lovely guitar work from Dad thrown in for good measure...Shame Mother could'nt make it along for a vocal performance. I was also suprised to find it was produced by another fav of mine Joe Henry...Well worth checking out too if you like this. Stunning Debut, looking forward to more.... Now does anybody recommend Rufus Wainwright?
