    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.co.uk Review
Writer-director Marc Lawrence's romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry's past and present via Hugh Grant's Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the '80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible--if often gently tongue-in-cheek--performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half the soundtrack with his earnest vocal charms. The production gets key help from Fountain of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who contributes a delicious, loving send-up of Wham! courtesy of "Meaningless Kiss," the emotive piano confessional "Don't Write Me Off," and two versions of "Way Back into Love," the comeback ballad/duet that drives the story line. A playful demo version of the latter pairs Grant with co-star Drew Barrymore (playing the florist who becomes Fletcher's unlikely songwriting foil), while Grant's ultimate duet with young Bennett evokes contemporary pop conceits with a keen, affectionate flair that also graces the young singer's Britney-esque "Buddha's Delight," "Slam," and the more obviously snarky "Entering Bootytown." Rounding out the collection are a pair of complimentary tracks by Swedish pop acts: The Sounds' bouncy "Tony the Beat" and the club-slinky groove of Teddybears' "Different Sound." Highlighted by Grant's sympathetic vocals and a knowing musical sensibility that never quite lapses into mere parody, it's a pop-lover's delight from start to finish. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Love the film and you'll probably enjoy this...   March 7, 2008
    Robbie Swale (York)
This is of course the sound track to the Hugh Grant/Drew Barrymore romantic comedy Music and Lyrics. If you've seen the film and enjoyed it, you'll love this. It's got all the versions described in the blurb on the Amazon item, and although I inevitably skip all of the quite frankly terrible (but deliberately so, so it's not that bad) Cora Corman songs, I really, really love the ones that involved Hugh Grant.

They include the brilliantly bad 80s records by his character's band Pop, joyous in their accurate send up of the 80s pop scene, bad because they are more schmaltzy than you can imagine. The only songs which are really good for their own sake are the two versions of Way Back Into Love, and Don't Write Me Off. I can be incredibly girly when I want to, and those three songs are perfect for me in that mood.

If you haven't heard the film, you may not really get much out of this. But if you want to buy it anyway, remember the film is a comedy, and the music should be taken with an enormous pinch of salt.

As a soundtrack, it does exactly what it says on the tin. But I can only give it four stars because Cora's songs are so mind-numbingly terrible that I can never listen to them.

5 out of 5 stars Music and Lyrics Album Review   June 7, 2007

This enthusiastic album is a great compliment to the big hit Music and Lyrics . If anyone has seen the wacky comedy then get out and but the album. The very well V known actor, Hugh Grant, plays a great role of an old pop star trying to have a come V back in the charts, and is later helped by Drew Barrymoore. Hugh Grant s beautiful voice is very entertaining in this pop hit. The song Pop goes my heart will be playing round and round your head as the sticky lyrics weave their way into your mind. The catchy tune can t help but put a smile on your face. When you re in desperate need of a quick giggle you know where to find one!

The film will have you rolling around in laughter when you first see Hugh Grant strutting his stuff in tight leather trousers, sporting a 60 s haircut and singing this great pop song. The album is a must V have and greatly entertaining. The first pop wonder V song gives you an insight to the rest of the amusing songs to follow. Drew Barrymoore joins Grant in an inspiring duet. The album contains many great songs that you can listen to over and over again without ever tiring of hearing Hugh Grant hit that high note!

Overall, see the film, buy the album, and you ll always have a smile on your face!

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!   March 23, 2007

Well, how to define this music? Absolutely brilliant, not to mention my favorite "Pop! Goes My Heart" a typical 80's song, although this one could have been easily a hit both then and now. It's amazing that such great effort was done for this song.

The other songs of this soundtrack are great too, and all actors could have been easily have been singers as well, given their talent. Buy it and enjoy it even if you don't usually go for Soundtracks.
