Amazon.co.uk Review
Apart from the non-release of Smile, the biggest lament of hardcore Beach Boys fans is that Bruce Johnston aside, none of the non-Brian Wilson solo albums are available on CD. But now, for fans of late drummer Dennis Wilson, there's reason to celebrate as his only-released solo album gets the reissue it deserves. Widely acknowledged as the finest Beach Boys solo effort, it's now presented with clarity, allowing the full sonic palette--the punch of opening "River Song" for example--to be heard in its intended glory. Wilson's raspy vocal may have been past its prime, but it's still affecting and ably supported by the sumptuous production values he gave the album. With high quality tracks such as the funky "Dreamer" and the poignant "Farewell My Friend", this will appeal to anyone with even a passing interest in The Beach Boys, as well as a delight for hardcore fans as the unreleased tracks (from the unfinished follow-up Bambu), easily match the original's quality. While the disappointing absence of earlier singles ("Lady" or "Sound of Free") prevents this from being a definitive career anthology, this is as essential a Beach Boys artefact as Pet Sounds or Sunflower/Surf's Up. --Thom Allott

Cry, Jump and Smile with the best reissue of this year!!! July 6, 2008 David Calcano (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to say I never thought Dennis could do a record like this one... yes I know I'm an idiot. But seriously, I am overblown by the feeling of these songs (Farewell my Friend, Time, End of Show), every song has the right element of surrounding sounds but never disturbing the greatness of the melodies and the amazing piano tracks. Unbelievably he included funky songs (pacific ocean blue) in this album and they all fit together like a miracle or whatever you want to call it. He blends the classic beach boys sound on a subtle way, with the Beatles creating an atmosphere making it very personal to listen to. The tracks have aged marvelously, man I'm so psyched about this album! How stupid I was not to have it years ago!! This is truly one of the best albums I have heard from a solo Beach Boy and yes, I am a huge Brian fan! From nostalgic sad & dark songs, happy love songs, to funky tunes this album has everything. Don't be another stupid and buy this album for a personal experience with melody. Let the music play! PS: The unreleased material is also unbelievable and I'm only reviewing disc1!! PS2: The packaging is UNBELIEVABLE !!! Don't dare to buy another version of the record.
Yes it is ... July 6, 2008 David Sandilands (Bristol, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
as good as you hoped it would be and beautifully packaged too. I also really like Bambu, the unreleased, supposedly unfinished, album and the bonus tracks as well.
Hidden Gem Then Still Wows Now July 4, 2008 Brian Newbould (North Yorkshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A truly great hidden gem. Packed full of feeling and funk. Being an ardent BB fan I bought the original vinyl as an early 20-something and was blown away all those years ago. It seems I've been waiting forever (no pun intended) for it to be re-released and finally it has arrived all 'cleaned up' complete with his second unreleased album 'Bambu' and bonus tracks too. I am in heaven! Seriously, as our American cousins would all too often remark this IS a genuinely 'seminal'/'awesome' work beautifully re-packaged and presented that even a cynical 'oldie but moldy' like me reared on gatefolds and free posters et al was suitably impressed, and all at a bargain price. Ignore the 1*, (as they say you always get one!)at the very least it is 4*, just buy, listen and enjoy then make your own mind up.
I will never tire of it.......................... July 3, 2008 Mr. I. Pippin (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pacific Ocean Blue is without doubt the most honest, powerful and most staggeringly beautiful album I have ever had the pleasure to hear. I challege anyone not to be moved to tears by Dennys voice on "thoughts of you" or indeed filled with hope and joy in the middle eight section of "The River". He was every bit the composer Brian is and could easily hold his own next to the angelic voice of his late brother Carl. If Denny had still been alive today I'm sure he would have been moved himself to see that the tunes and words he gave life to all those years ago are finally getting the recognition they deserve. Denny Forever............................................
I was surprised by the quality of it... probably not for everybody. July 1, 2008 Alejo (Andorra) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I assured myself I will not indulge in writing music reviews anymore. Perhaps because been born in the early fifties I was treated to probably what was the best period of pop and rock music as the soundtrack of my life... so I guess I am much prejudiced against today standards (very much lower in my humble opinion...). Surfing through amazon I was once intrigued by reviews (and also outrageous prices of the second hand market... glad I passed... and waited for this) about this album. In one word AMAZING. I always thought he was much underrated... but now this is the understatement of the year... listen to it before buying (NO BEACH BOYS SOUND AT ALL IT IS DIFFERENT AND VERY GOOD)... but I fell in love with it with only ONE listening session. What great keyboards too! So, here you have it IT WAS WORTH MY TIME AND MONEY. GOOD FOR HIM!... (somehow drummer's always surprise me...) ADB
