4 out of 5 stars Surprise find...   January 22, 2008

Graphics are very good indeed, as is the realism (although my submarine warfare experience is, thankfully, zero). It is a game that requires much patience and you can return from missions lasting several days without even having any enemy engagament! But the fun of sneaking into the middle of a convoy then picking off boats at will is very satisfying. Just don't let the enemy start pinging you!! Hours of enjoyment for the patient amongst you.

4 out of 5 stars Not for Vista   November 26, 2007

This is a good improvement over SH2, mainly because of the new campaign mode. In the SH2, you could sink a battleship in one mission and see it again in the next. SH3 keeps track of these.

Unfortunately, it's NOT Vista compatible, as I found out when My old Xp machine fried it's motherboard.

One new build machine with Vista64HP and SH3 refused to run (though it installs and informed me My OS was okay). Tried removing the disc protection (using software provided) and still nothing.

SH4 on the other hand is better still, though it has a few problems. And is fully Vista(64 and 32) compatible.

    JBV^_^

    5 out of 5 stars Great!   December 24, 2006

This is a surperb game, but not for the casual gamer. The graphics are fantastic, it sounds great, and the enemy AI is (almost always) pretty damn smart. The fun of sneaking your boat into a good firing position, setting a torpedo to run just below the enemy's keel and then seeing the magnetic fuse break that ship's back is not to be underestimated. You will need some patience, it takes a while to learn all the tricks, but an excellent game.

    4 out of 5 stars Perhaps a little niche   November 28, 2006

I'd say the previous reviewer didn't quite get this game. Obviously this game is slow without time compression on, as it simulates real-time submarine warfare. There's a lot of sea, not many boats, and submarines are slow... Time compression is unsurprisingly provided up to 1024x...

The crew don't seem to get tired at full acceleration to avoid you having to overly micromanage, but you will find crew getting tired during long engagements. Best avoid long engagements...

Depending on the mode, the sonar operator's detected contact lines will appear on the main map. Torpedo aiming is a difficult art, and requires careful management of the sub's direction and some gut feeling as to what manoeuver a ship is likely to attempt. Don't expect them to behave like photon torpedoes (although the later wake-homing torpedoes are fabulous against warships).

It's an odd game, and I think it's somewhat heavy on realism and low on fun, but it's still a sound game. If only it didn't use starforce copy protection.

2 out of 5 stars Silent Hunter is, well to be frank.........Boring.   November 5, 2006

Tooo slow without time compression turned on.
Crew are forever tired, subs battery is forever flat.
Targets picked up by the sonar operator can seldom be found and most Torpedo's miss the target unless you are surfaced and within 500 yds.
Graphics are excellent and sound is very good.
But for me its just a yawn.............SORRY
