Superb July 22, 2008 Mark Burns (Scotland) What a bit of kit. I spent ages online looking for the best deal, even went to Which to look at their reviews too. This machine came 4th in their tests, and I am wondering what the other three did that this didn't. We had been borrowing an old Bosch from my father-in-law, having just moved to a rented place with our first garden. I didn't want to spend too much on a lawnmower, but wanted something that would mean I had more time to sit out on the lawn rather than the hour and a half it took to cut it all and gather the cut grass that "missed" the grass box. With all the reviews, tests and then a recommendation from a work colleague, I went for the Rotak 40. Out of the box it was pretty light, and requires the grass box to be put together as stated in a few other reviews (three pieces, clicked together in a few minutes) Maybe mine is a new design, but this was pretty simple to complete. A few clips here, and insertion of a few screws there, and the machine was ready to go in about 15 minutes. Off we went to the garden, and it was pretty easy to move around being so light and having some well placed handles. Switched on, and filled the grass box in about ten minutes. I was pretty surprised at this, but looking behind me I realised that not a blade of grass had been left on the lawn. It took me about 30 minutes in total, to do what had usually been a 90 minute chore. Any complaints? Well I am not sure about the lovely red combs on the side. Maybe I expected more than they could give, but I still have to tidy the grass along the sides of my fence so maybe this is more gimicky than a practical aid. It did take more from the side than I usually got though so it must have done something. The grass box filled pretty quickly like I said (a good thing as it shows it is pretty efficient) but there was no real way to see that the box was full. The only other thing is that there is no cable tidy on the handles. It didn't cost much to get one, but this is supposed to be at the higher end of the Rotak series - don't be so cheap Bosch! On all of these points though I don't think they merit taking a star from the review as everything else was excellent and none of my complaints impacted on the abilities of this machine to do what it should - Cut grass.
Just the job! July 18, 2008 Buffalo Bill (Lincoln, UK) Just the job!Had it 18 months, no problems. Easy to lift(up/down steps)Easy empty. Cuts great even on damp or uneven ground. Lovely stripes!! Quick release long cable.
Efficient and powerful at a a good price July 16, 2008 A. Atkins (London UK) I bought this electric mower after moving to a petrol one that was heavy and temperamental: the engine wouldn't start at times and has a tendency to die or flood if you stress it, and the grass always clogs up as it enters the storage unit, even with perfectly dry grass, so you get cuttings spilling over the lawn. Ironically I'd moved to petrol from electric because I bought a house with a much larger garden and I thought petrol would be go-anywhere (doesn't need a huge cable lead) and more powerful. Perhaps I should have bought a higher-quality model but I found myself remembering all the reasons I dislike petrol mowers - heavy, in need of regular maintenance, prone to misfire even if you have cleaned the sparkplugs and so on. With repair companies charging 50 just to look at a mower that won't behave, you need something ultra-reliable. I was impressed by the very favourable reviews of this Bosch mower and am pleased to agree with them so far. The mower feels discouragingly light and flimsy straight out of the box, but once assembled the motor and blade are excellent, the cut is wide, and the mower is really easy to move around. There's an easy-to-use mechanism for adjusting the blade height between 7 settings (none of that fiddling around under the mower with a spanner while petrol drips onto the lawn), and the grass box works perfectly. I raced round my garden in no time without any of the usual hassles. My only criticism was that the grass box may be a little small because I seemed to be constantly emptying it, though this may just reflect its efficiency at collection compared to my petrol mower leaking clippings everywhere. Of course this Bosch mower is flattered by the fact I bought and first used it in mid-summer. The real test will come in the autumn and spring, when the edge has been taken off the blade, and despite one's best intentions, the grass is damp and longer than you would prefer because it's hard to get a few dry days. Besides the mower I purchased an RCD breaker for safety, a cable winder and storage device, and a spare blade - saves all the hassle of finding a replacement when you really need it.
Great Mower July 8, 2008 R. Beeston (UK) I bought this mower to replace my 10 year old hover which had died. This mower is excellent - quicker, easier and will cut wet grass better than my old mower. I bought this mower on the strength of the reviews and I have not been disappointed. The only problem I have now is that I'm having to empty the collection box so quickly I spending a bigger portion of my time running back a forward to my compost area. Great Buy - Great Value
Watch out Flymo July 8, 2008 Mr. P. Taylor (UK) I have recently purchased this lawnmower after reading the reviews on Amazon. My last lawnmower was a Flymo which was about 5 years old. Having just used the Rotak 40 for the first time, i am amazed at how well it has cut my grass compared to the Flymo. This mower seems to cut the grass instead of ripping it like the Flymo. The Rotak also gets much closer to the edges. The only reason I have given this mower a 4 instead of a 5 is that it would have been nice for Bosch to have installed an easy wind in cable assessory rather than having to wrap the cable around the handle bars which Flymo do provide. Apart from this the Rotak is head and sholders above the Flymo in its cutting. Maybe Flymo will pick up its game now that someone else is coming into there market.....
