OBSIDIAN

Obsidian on many levels is a powerful. Of lava extraction, it is particularly strong with a sharp cutting edge, and used as such by many native Indians. The powers within it work on many levels, seen and unseen. Perhaps it may be likened to the travellings of the deepest and darkest parts of the soul, and seeing through the blinding light at the door of the universe. Obsidian may be used in knowledge and it may also be used solely in faith and trust. A pure stone brimming with light. It holds many universes and it's mysteries hold many keys.

At the beginning of last year I surprised myself by purchasing many highly polished spheres and eggs of the deepest black Obsidian possible. Occasionally they contained swirls of tiny galaxies that shone bewitchingly from them. Sometimes these are unseen by normal eyesight, but under a microscope shine out, calling like brilliant stars. As I normally lean towards lighter and brighter gemstones I consulted the oracle. The answer was plain. It was a stone much needed, far more than ever before. From inner fears, hauntings, unpleasant happenings, guilt-rides, poltergeists to healing, balancing and contacting spirit-energies it is the huge chasm between one world and the next. If you like, it is the darkness that our next step forward must take us through, as a collective world-creature. Like black-star dioptase it holds ends and the beginnings of new worlds.

Maybe the tiny black Obsidian pebbles that come to us from the fiery depths will attract most people. Small and black, when held to the light they have a reassuring transparency about them. Called by many Apache Tears and carried as amulets or forces to draw out negativity. Their legend tells the wearer that his time of tears is at an end. All his crying is done. That he has never walked alone and that he never will. His childhood is over. He can walk forward with the sadness of his past transmuted to knowledge. No more tears. They speak in words that are repeated time and time again in world-age messages, and reveal themselves in words and pictures vividly before the mind's eye. My first contact with an Apache Tear was thus, a precious gift indeed.

On a more practical side in the cases of buildings being harbingers of unpleasant memories or happenings, or even malignant spirits perhaps caught in their own unhappiness or greed, these gentle stones placed in a pyramid pattern as large as possible within the house had immediate effects. The answer was brought into the minds of a professional medical doctor and my husband when deciding on a problem of just such a nature, a house built upon part of an ancient battle ground. So we find these stones have a banishing effect upon unpleasant manifestations. Maybe this is a key, for it occurs not only on one level. This experiment has worked time and time again.

The colour black may also give us a clue. Belonging to the first chakra, the base chakra of the body. Connected with personal fulfilment, the physical and magnetic and the drawing of spirit and action. Obsidian brings light into darkened areas, refining and purifying. A stone not to be worn continuously, but it maybe slept with. A drawer out of negativity, held gently in the hands or placed in rooms and on desks of healers and helpers of others. A silent worker in darkness. A stone we do not use, it is there working with us, assimilating our intent, balancing and enlightening our fears. Used with intent it will show areas of ourselves in such light and detail that for this reason many shun it, unable to see the imbalance, the fear and blackness that is reflected in the inner eye and heart. A place that man must travel through to see his original self. Obsidian is a stone that should be viewed without fear, but trust in it's journey. Called by some Slayer of Illusion, it has become known as a master teacher. Like many crystals it will travel back into unknown areas of past lives, but usually with a very sound purpose, when a confrontation of victim and perpetrator needs to be resolved. As with this knowledge, viewed in all perspectives, it can have no other outcome but good, as the blackness and new light shows up all in a truer form and widening patterns of life. It may be hard to come to terms with it at first, but this is part of moving onwards, of growing up. Seeing in a true perspective, meditations with clear quartz work well in balancing this stage.

Crystals made in fire, akin easily to angelic vibrations. A link between angel and man. Crystals are literally a push forward from one age to another. When this step is forged they once again will sleep, bar the master teachers. Earth rushes forward on it's path of destiny, and before the next step man must take his mind-step to ensure that evolution fulfils it's promise. At each mind-step in mankind the greater or other worlds step in, for without this interruption we would hesitate. The message comes purely in each crystalline vibration. See not in fear, see the larger life-growth, the need for evolutionary patterning. Hatreds and violent dislikes are held in fear. There are many times in our existence where the lesser good is sacrificed for the greater good, so it is occurring now before our eyes. So those that have any fears surrounding crystals release those arguments and turmoils of their conscious minds so that they will dissipate with the movement of knowledge and releasement. The fear of survival is already written and redressed in time's evolution. It is not our greater plan to see in selfish individuality but to allow the cosmic intelligence to serve it's creatures, that in each cleansing some may walk forward on to the next spiral of earth's own walk.

The larger polished Obsidian eggs and balls obviously have the greater power-impact than the smaller. In areas where delicate counselling or healing is needed, where fear predominates or is hiding beneath the surface, place Obsidian in the room to begin it's work. Vibrations working upon sister vibrations, harmonising and drawing out negativity. A silent prayer activates the smallest of molecules. Many people visit our museum just to stand in the presence of the crystals that will surround them, uplifting their hearts and souls, reaching into misted areas held down by much negativity and superstition over decades. Many also come to hold the Obsidians and to see the manifestation of their negativity that is drawn from them. Some experience a release from darkness and answers to hidden questions. Fears are released when light is bright and the worst monsters stand before one, part of the self or part of the family life. Lit up, no longer secret, shown in ever understanding ways. Diffused, negated, reflected, welcomed, experienced, all are embraced by Obsidian's powerful rays. Perhaps it holds the secret of darkness. These are the ways Obsidian works, always with the purest of motives, although following and opening up codes within man's mind, if once asked.

In the past it has been a stone perhaps of fear. Held in by priests and magicians who have long known it's power. The power of the initiator and of the destroyer. Negative use of all crystals is unwise, and particularly so with Obsidian. It's great power boomerangs and returns like the law of karma. There are no second chances with Obsidian. It's blackness engulfs and extinguishes. In the burning flames all is rearranged. All is begun again. Obsidian shines with the power of the master, the seer and is closely allied with the red energies of magic. Revealer of truth, defender, reflector, it pulls the traveller through his own worlds. This is reflected sometimes in the feeling or touch when holding Obsidian. A feeling that the hand just passes through it. Just as our conscious and unconscious part of ourselves fluctuate so does the hand pass through and hold it in rapid succession.

Naturally Obsidian's highly polished surface works well in a scrying manner and many pictures form easily upon it mirrors answering quickly and positively all questions posed. Although these are seen and heard within the mirror they are also seen and heard or voiced through one's inner self and inner eye.

Generally there is a third vibration or party working through or in conjunction and is generally called upon or visualised up for guidance and help, depending on what is involved. Pictures are readily activated and played with great clarity. If the seer is personally involved truths are seen immediately, without any softening of clouds. Obsidian has often been used for seeing into the future. Maybe it plays a special part, for it also shows up our fears and shortcomings. A stone to use with respect and love for it's honesty and truth. A last doorkeeper to the place where our inner hauntings are kept veiled. Certainly it is very special and needed at the beginning and end of each of our spiritual journeys. Obsidian is often advised to have a large clear quartz crystal accompanying it to help balance the imperfection of humanity.

Obsidian has been around for a long time, but is now considered one of the most important gemstones of the New Age. Much needed for travelling through our own personal nights, a way to see the open eyes of the stars. If fear and selfish use is cast aside Obsidian will be the most perfect companion, always ready and willing to work alongside. Obsidian has aided the recovery of many unpleasant complaints brought about by collective fear pattern. Balancing, repatterning, harmonising; it's beauty is like the beginning of a new world. No wonder it has such an awe-inspiring quality about it, replacing negativity with the birth of life. New lamps for old, or perhaps new eyes for old!
