Great for a baby fascinated with noises August 11, 2008 Mmebfli (Bermuda) After reading the reviews, I was unsure on whether to purchase this toy. I was looking for a set of musical instruments for my 6 month old baby whose sole motivation right now is to make everything she touches make a noise of some sort. Based on the reviews,I was prepared that it was not going to be as sturdy a toy as i might have liked but it was great for my child. Each instrument makes a jingle of some sort enough to satisfy a six month old but I will wait and see how long it will keep her entertained. She loves the muscial ditty the octopus plays. It is a great toy for a baby and you will be happy with it as long as you do not have unrealistic expectations of it. It is a bunch of quality, brightly colored cloth rattles with a seaside theme that make a rattle or jingle of some sort.
I'm not trying to create a Baby Mozart February 26, 2008 A. Mott (Long Island, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this item for my son @ 2 months of age. He receives p.t. for a tightness in his neck and this toy always engages him in his stretches. Besides using it in therapy, he loves it at home, he's now almost 8 months. I didn't expect this to create the sounds of the Beatles, I expected it to be a baby toy that allowed him to use his sense of curiosity with it and that's what he does. He loves when I tap the top of the drum and then he taps it(this toy is definitely not a babysitter, you have to engage in it with your child) also, he shakes the clam shells and the lobster but he taps the tambourine, like he should to hear the different sounds. The octopus drum has crinkly legs, which he loves and a short tune (what baby has a very long attention span? And remember repitition is key for infants). Also as the child gets older, you can use the drum to show how you put things in and then take them out. I think maybe other parents expected too much from this item. It's very simple, not a lot of bells and whistles, but that's the best part. You're baby can make it whatever he or she wants, sometimes its a chew toy, sometimes we bang the drum and sometimes we just plain explore it by putting things in and taking them. All in all this is a wonderful product for the price, the quality is good (all items but the drum I have put in the washer) and my son always finds it interesting.
Cute toy...for a baby November 25, 2007 J. Sheaffer (San Jose, CA USA) This is a good product, but it fits a specific need. This is by no way a musical instrument set. It's just a bunch of cute baby toys that your baby can chew on, shake and hear noise, and pull on the various parts. I was expecting more of a musical instrument set, but once it arrived I realized this is just fine and probably a much better fit for our 7 mo old. The pieces are cute, and durable. My 7 mo old loves to pull and chew on everything, and after a few weeks there are no signs of the pieces coming apart. The noises the pieces make are essentially the same bells and rattles you find in all infant toys, except for the Octopus drum (which I thought was a crab until my wife corrected me). This drum has an electronic jingle player in the yellow arm. The music is very digitized, but I have to admit I'm addicted to it...and so is my daughter. She loves the tune, it's very catchy. BTW, the drum does not make any drum noises (whew!). It's basically just a soft cylinder with a semi-hard plastic top, but the whole drum is not sturdy enough to actually make drum noises. Again, that's a good thing because I don't really want an efficient drum around, and you want these toys very soft so your infant can roll on it, chew it, and toss it around. My only complaint is that the octopus drum was squashed in the box it came in. So our's is collapsed and doesn't look like a nice drum as in the product pictures. It was packed that way, and as such has a permanent crushed look. It really doesn't affect the usage of the drum, and my infant doesn't care...it's more of a annoyance to me cause it feels like I received a slightly defective product. Summary: A cute infant toy that makes some sounds but not too much. It's soft and durable. But it's not in any way intended to make music.
Good, but not great March 12, 2007 Jack's Mom (Burbank, CA United States) I bought this for my 6 month old son thinking he would like the sounds it makes. But, the "drum" part doesn't make any sounds, and when you bang the other pieces on it, it doesn't do anything to encourage the kids to learn the cause and effect. The pieces that come with it are great -- my son particually likes the lobster. I would have given this toy more stars if the drum part was made of a different material and could help make more sound.
Bop to the music! February 7, 2007 Manxman (East Coast) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
It's true that it's not quite what I expected; it looks like a series of musical instruments and it's more like soft puppets that happen to make noise, but if you realize that's what it is, it's so much fun! The octopus "drum" is soft enough to drum with any-sized child, and its song (press one of the tentacles) is catchy enough that we wore the battery out. The maracas shake and rattle, and the lobster chimes when it shakes. These are simple "instruments" for the smallest children, not realistic music makers. Our child loves hitting the "tambourine" and the "drum," and he definitely dances when we play the octopus song. So, no, not for the musical virtuoso in your house. For that, there's better. But for simple cute noisemakers (that all easily fit back into their own carrying case, by the way, in the form of the octopus), this is a keeper.
