5 out of 5 stars Home Run for Jet   June 16, 2008

I replaced my 15 year-old Jet JTAS left-tilt tablesaw with the new deluxe Xacta saw, 3HP, 50" Fence. Jet has come a long way in that time! Fit and finish is superb. The table and extensions are flat, with the exception of a very minor concave bow in the edge of the melamine table. Surface grind is very fine - not a mirror finish, but very smooth. There is virtually no arbor runout, and the saw arrived aligned to the miter slots within a few 10 thousandths. Jet's fence (Xacta Fence II) has also improved over the years. It is heavier and smoother than on my old saw. The miter gauge is basic and unchanged.

The blade guard is superb, literally the first usable guard I've ever owned or personally used - independently moving, very heavy plastic side leaves, see-through top, and even a swinging front plastic piece. The guard is as easy to take on and off as the Jet demo video shows, as is the riving knife. Dust collection is also superb, even more so with the guard in place. The arbor lock is such a no-brainer that I'm surpised they haven't been on tablesaws for years, given how common they are on other tools. Finally, I never realized how handy having a drawer in the cabinet is!

The lift and tilt mechanisms are smooth as glass and the handwheels are high-quality, heavy, and chromed (rims and handle). This was a concern as I bought the saw without being able to physically demo it. As it happens, the mechanism seems better to me than the PM2000 I did demo, and at least as good as the new Canadian-made General saw with riving knife, which I also recently demoed.

As with another reviewer, setup took me about 3 hours. The fussiest parts were aligning the front rail to ensure it was parallel to the table along its length and attaching the switch. Having countersunk holes in the rail tends to make it move as the flat head screws are tightened. The switch was unbraced on Jet's older saws, giving it a mushy feeling as the box flexed on its hanger. It is well-braced on the new saw and very rigid. It was fussy to get the brace on, however, as one end attaches to the corner bolt holding the table to the cabinet. That bolt was TIGHT! I was also reluctant to loosen it, as the saw arrived so well-aligned. I would prefer the brace mount directly to the cabinet or top, but everything turned out just fine. I had quite a few fasteners left over at the end of assembly, which seems common for Jet tools for some reason. The fasteners, by the way were a mix of SAE (for the melamine extension) and metric (the rest of the saw). You need to have tools for both on hand. Only one part was missing, the fence lock knob, which Jet shipped immediately. Terrific customer service. The dado insert I also ordered from Woodcraft at the time of purchase is backordered until mid-July, 2008.

The saw arrived without a cord or plug, as most do. One minor quibble with the wiring block - the screw stripped out immediately when fastening one wire. No problem, I just moved the wires to the adjacent terminal. The wiring block takes spade lugs. I'm sure you can wire it without them, but the lugs are easier. 14 gauge rubber cord is a perfect fit for the block. I had some 12 gauge cord on-hand, but it wouldn't make it through the screw-on cap for the block.

I purchased the saw from Woodcraft - ordered it, actually, as the saw was unavailable in the US at the time. Two advantages with Woodcraft - first, no shipping charged if picked up at the store. Second, I managed to hit the happy combination of a Woodcraft 15% off sale, a Jet sale, and a Jet promotion with a free clamp set. The saw arrived in pristine condition, bolted down on two corners to the pallet and covered with an extraordinarily thick cardboard box. Fence, cast extensions, melamine extension, the leg set, and rails arrived in separate boxes. All also in perfect condition. If you're picking up the saw yourself, it fits nicely into a UHAUL 5x8 closed trailer on its pallet and with its box on top. Their smaller trailers won't pass the boxed-up saw through their smaller doors.

Bottom line - the Jet deluxe is a superb tablesaw for an excellent price. Versus its competitors (with riving knives): The PM2000 is also an excellent saw - more money, even better surface grind, but I was disappointed in the built-in rolling base. If you like it, it's worth the additional money, however. The Grizzly is also well-priced, and Grizzly support is superb, but I've read of too many quality issues with Grizzly to roll the dice. I have no doubt that if you get a good Grizzly saw, it will be very good indeed, though. The new General would be my personal next choice, but is quite a bit more expensive than the Jet. I really, really like the SawStop and considered it for quite some time, but think its price is excessive, even when considering its quality - even more so because at that price it should have a North American motor. It's pretty hard to get a SawStop to your door for less than $4k. I demo'd the long-awaited SawStop contractor saw at the same time I demo'd the General, by the way. In my opinion, it does not yield the same quality for the price as their cabinet saw. My immediate impression of the contractor saw was that the mechanism felt rough.

Jet has hit a home run with the deluxe Xacta Saw.

The saw came in perfect condition. It took about 3 hours to put together.the instructions were very clear and the assembly was effortless. All factory set up was on the money and the only adjustment was the rifing knive to the blade. What a dream to use. From the first cut the saw works great. i built a four by 8 outfeed table and installed my router lift in the side table. What a pleasure to do wood working. Also the fence is very accurate. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Great Saw   February 13, 2008

Great Saw! Very solid. Great fence. New guard design is great, easy to remove and reinstall. I have actually made every one of my cuts with a guard or at least the riving knife. Dust collection is good. Table is flat and nicely machined. I was debating between this saw and the PM2000, but I could not justify the price difference. I had a Bosch 4000 prior to this saw, the upgrade was well worth the cost. This machine is solid and very powerful. I recommend this saw for anyone in the market.
