Former judge Justin Playfair (George C. Scott) lost his wife a few years back, and ever since he's thought he's Sherlock Holmes, determined to find his archnemesis Professor Moriarty, in this thoroughly charming tale of madness and romanticism. Playfair (er, Sherlock) is about to be committed by his brother, who wants his money, when by serendipity he's teamed up with psychiatrist Dr. Mildred Watson, no less (Joanne Woodward). She finds him fascinating, being a bit daffy herself, and together they get involved in various intrigues, mostly aimed at evading the medical authorities, but which allow the two to fall in love. Though the farcical tone of the film keeps it a lighthearted comedy, the heavy-handed slaps at authority, who are set up for such abuse, seem programmed to succeed. To what degree is lunacy, charming though it may be at times, an appropriate reaction to complex times? "To the utmost degree!" says this film, though the viewer may enjoy it and still disagree. During a comic battle in a supermarket (reminiscent of a silent comedy pie fight), one patient chases her keeper with an oversized hypodermic to the rallying cry of "I hope the loonies win!" That expresses the sympathies of the film nicely. --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars Professor Moriarty is out there somewhere in Manhattan   July 24, 2010

Moreover, we get to search for Moriarty together with the real duo of George C. Scott and Joanne Woodward.

It appears that Justin Playfair (George C. Scott) things he is Sherlock Holmes. An investigation by Dr. Mildred Watson (Joanne Woodward) may prove he is Holmes and she is really the Dr. Watson. On their mission to find their elusive archenemy, Professor Moriarty, they barely pass by one of his traps in a supermarket. Watch as Holmes makes a unique diversion. In the process, we may learn a little bit about ourselves.

I am rooting for them and you will be.

Do not thing the film is just carried by two actors. You may find some of our other favorites in this film.

I caught this at a budget theatre soon after it was released(I think it was double billed with "Red Sky At Morning", another underappreciated film). I walked out of the theatre just feeling kind of good: I'd scored a bargain in this .99 double bill. I went to a friend's house, and told her & her mom about this odd take on Sherlock Holmes, and my friend's mom went off about how bad it was, how all the critics ripped it, but it's stuck with me over the years, much better than many of 1971's movies. While researching this review, I looked at some of the movies released that year: The Last Picture Show: The Definitive Director's Cut (Special Edition), Harold and Maude, The French Connection(I'm sorry, best picture??), Klute, Vanishing Point, Duel (Collector's Edition)- the greatest TV movie ever, Walkabout - Criterion Collection, THX 1138 - The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition), The Hired Hand, and another great George C. Scott vehicle The Hospital: for my tastes, 1971 was really big stuff, and this film got lost in the shuffle, but it's still dear to my heart, and one of my favorite takes on Sherlock Holmes(along with Without a Clue.
Scott is wonderful as a judge who has come unglued after the death of his wife, and believes he is Holmes. His unscrupulous brother wants to have him committed, and Scott's character is sent to be evaluated by a doctor, Dr Watson, played by Joanne Woodward. Jack Guilford is wonderful as a nebbish who wants to be The Scarlet Pimpernel, and is as good as he was as Doc Daneeka in Catch-22. Oliver Clark plays an asylum inmate who wants to be a hero, and who delivers one of my three favorite lines in the film, the title of this review. My other two fave lines are "God bless ya, Barbara Stanwyck!!", and Scott's immortal line to Woodward, "Keep repeating to yourself, 'I..am..adequate'".
"They Might Be Giants" is much better than adequate

Between George C. Scott and Joanne Woodward the acting could hardly get better... a plot that's been known and used before, put in the hands of these two great actors, is fresh and engaging. I can not say enough good things about this film.

I would love to purchase this movie as a gift, but it is definitely overpriced. Is there anyone in marketing that has figured out that you can sell several thousand copies of this film at a lower price and still make money! Will someone please step up to the plate!!
